You Couldn't Make It Up!

by Jack Little

A piece of Thistle and SFL history was made on 10/3/1894 when Thistle defeated their namesake rivals Thistle (Glasgow) 13-1. Some months later, on 1/12/1894, Airdrieonians clocked up 15 goals against Dundee Wanderers so the record score wasn't held for long. However, 3 Thistle players (Paul, Freebairn and Proudfoot) scored hat-tricks that day and this achievement is unlikely ever to be repeated. What's more quirky is the fact that all three players were called William.
