William McDonald was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The midfielder joined Thistle in 1884. He made his first known appearance on Saturday, 20th December, 1884, in a 5-4 friendly draw away to Dundee Harp. William scored his first known goal for Thistle on Saturday, 7th September, 1889, in a 3-2 defeat away to 3rd L.R.V. in the Scottish Cup. He scored the last of his 9 known goals on Saturday, 24th March, 1900, in a 5-3 win at home to Abercorn in the SFL Second Division. He played his last known game for the club on Tuesday, 20th August, 1901, in a 2-0 defeat at home to Queen's Park in a Benefit match, having clocked up at least 123 appearances for the Thistle. His club-list included Partick Thistle and Bedminster. We don't know where or when William died. *

He made his debut appearance on Saturday, 25th December, 1909, in a 3-1 win at home to Hibernian in the SFL First Division. William scored his first goal for Thistle on Saturday, 15th April, 1911, in a 6-1 friendly win at home to East Stirlingshire. He scored his second and last goal on Wednesday, 3rd January, 1912, in a 5-3 defeat away to St Mirren in a Benefit match. That turned out to be his last game for the club, having appeared as a Jag on 54 occasions. His club-list included Maryhill, Partick Thistle, St Mirren and Vale of Leven. We don't know where or when William died. *
