![]() William signed for Thistle in May 1903, just before it became a limited company, and was described as “a centre of considerable promise”. That said, he more often featured as an inside left during his 3 seasons with the club, spent almost entirely in the reserves. The Jags were on the rise having just finished 8th in the top-flight and were looking to finally establish a permanent berth in the upper tier of the Scottish game. All of William's first-team appearances were in 1903-04; he could always boast that he played at least once in the top-flight and, indeed, that he had a 100% win-rate in so doing! He appeared on match day nine and some 4,000 were at Meadowside on 10th October to see Thistle overcome Morton by the odd goal in three. He got a second opportunity a couple of months later and 800 were at Merchiston Park for a friendly encounter. It was a low shot from 20-yards by William on 55 minutes which proved to be decisive; East Stirlingshire 0 Partick Thistle 1. His third and final appearance as a first-teamer came in April 1904 as the Jags won 1-0 in Edinburgh in a friendly encounter versus Leith Athletic. William's early promise seems to have came to nothing, and he made no impact at his only other senior club, Alloa Athletic. |
