 Thomas Smith Gibbs was born on Sunday, 7th September, 1902, in Dumbarton. The 5' 11 (12st 6 lbs) goalkeeper signed for George Easton's Thistle on Saturday, 15th May, 1926, having most recently been with Dunfermline Athletic. Aged 23, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 14th August, 1926, in a 1-1 draw away to Falkirk in the SFL First Division. There were no clean-sheets for Tommy during his spell with Thistle. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 21st August, 1926, in a 5-4 defeat at home to Morton in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 3 occasions. His club-list included Queen's Park, Dunfermline Athletic, Partick Thistle and Arthurlie. Tommy died on Friday, 26th August, 1932, in Glasgow, aged 29. |
 This Dumbarton-born keeper spent almost 3 full seasons with Queen's Park from 1923-24, racking up more than 70 League appearances in that time, including an impressive stint as an ever-present in 1924-25. He was lured to East End Park in February 1926 with a view to keeping Dunfermline Athletic's title-bid on track. The Pars were duly promoted as champions, with Tommy keeping goal in 12 of those all-important League games. He joined Thistle in May of that same season as George Easton planned for life without Joe Ramsay and Alex Binnie, both of whom were destined for English football. Johnny Jackson was another recruit in the close season of 1926, so it seems the goalie jersey was up for grabs. Tommy got his chance in the first three games of the season. A 1-1 League draw at Falkirk was followed by a 1-0 defeat in the Stirling Charity Cup challenge away to King's Park. To say the 5-4 League defeat at home to Morton signalled trouble for Tommy would be an understatement. It was the death knell! Johnny Jackson took the jersey for the League trip to Ibrox the following week, and proceeded to keep it until 1933, literally 313 competitive games not-out! Scunnered, Tommy moved on to Second Division Arthurlie in August 1927, but made only 1 League appearance during that season. |
