Tom Smith |
Thomas William Smith was born on Friday, 12th October, 1973, in Glasgow. The 5' 8½ (11st 9lbs) defender signed for John Lambie's Thistle on Tuesday, 30th July, 1991 (having already appeared as a youth), having most recently been with Partick Thistle Boys Club. Aged 17, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 4th May, 1991, in a 2-0 defeat at home to Airdrieonians in the SFL First Division. Tom scored his first goal for Thistle on Saturday, 24th July, 1993, in an 8-3 friendly win away to Ballyclare Commrades. He scored the last of his 10 goals on Tuesday, 30th July, 1996, in a 3-0 friendly win away to Glentoran. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 17th August, 1996, in a 0-0 draw at home to Dundee in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 70 occasions. Tom's club-list included Partick Thistle, Cork City, Ayr United, Clydebank and Hibernian. |
First appeared in the first team as a 17-year-old in an end of season match against Airdrie in 1991. It took him a few more seasons to establish himself in the top team - although he did make a Premier League debut at Ibrox against Rangers - but once he had done so his versatility proved to be a great asset. He scored a number of very important goals for the club including a late equaliser against Celtic at Parkhead, after only minutes earlier seeing a similar effort disallowed for offside, that helped secure Premier League survival for another season. Left Firhill to join Ayr United before eventually moving to Edinburgh to play in the SPL with Hibs. Alas, his career at Easter Road was cruelly cut short due to injury. |
