Bio Extra

Ronnie joined Kilmarnock from East Kilbride Thistle at a time when Kilmarnock were playing well, in the 1969-70 season. They were Scottish champions in 1964-65, having been runners-up the previous season. In 1967, the club reached the semi-finals of the Inter City Fairs Cup. Ronnie’s first senior match for Killie was in a European Fair’s Cup 3rd round 2nd leg tie away in Romania against Dinamo Bacau, the 1st leg at Rugby Park having ended 1-1. Killie had also recruited former Jag Hugh Strachan from Morton, and the two made their debuts in this match. Unfortunately Kilmarnock’s veteran striker Frank Beattie had broken his leg at Parkhead just prior to this tie, and the club went down 2-0.

Killie were short of cash, and the following seasons were barren ones. The 10 club Scottish Premier League had been created in the 1975-76 season to “freshen up” Scottish Football, and both Thistle (13 position 1974-75) and Killie (12 position 1974-75) lost out. Thistle won the 1st Division title the following season, with Kilmarnock in 2nd, 6 points behind Thistle. After 152 appearances and 18 goals, Ronnie left Killie for the Jags. In August 1977, he was included in Thistle's pre-season tour of the Highlands, playing against Keith, Caledonian and Ross County, with wins in all 3 matches. Ronnie’s only further appearance that season was in a 4-0 Premier League defeat to Rangers at Firhill in August 1977. He made 7 appearances in 1977-78, including a number of starts in the Anglo-Scottish Cup. He played 2 further matches, firstly against Morton on 1 October 1979, in a 4-1 League Cup defeat and 3 days later in a Premier League 2-1 victory over St Mirren at Love Street. The player went on to play for Duncanrigg Amateurs.

Ronnie graduated with a B Sc degree, and worked as a manager in the roads department of South Ayrshire District Council. He later became a Member of the of the Institute of Civil Engineers (M.I.C.E.), becoming a senior manager in Strathclyde Regional Council.
