| Rod McDonald |
Rodney McDonald was born on Monday, 20th March, 1967, in Westminster, London. The 5' 10½ (12st 2lbs) forward signed for John Lambie's Thistle on Friday, 23rd September, 1994, having most recently been with Walsall. Aged 27, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 24th September, 1994, in a 2-2 draw at home to Motherwell in the SFL Premier Division. That day, Rod became a member of our scoring debutant's club. He scored the last of his 12 goals on Saturday, 3rd February, 1996, in a 2-1 defeat at home to Rangers in the SFL Premier Division. He played his last game for the club on Sunday, 12th May, 1996, in a 1-1 draw at home to Dundee United in a League play-off match, having appeared as a Jag on 50 occasions. Rod's club-list included South Liverpool, Colne Dynamoes, Walsall, Partick Thistle, Southport, Chester City, Winsford United, Accrington Stanley, Barrow, Runcorn, Northwich Victoria and Droylsden. |
![]() Controversy surrounded almost his whole career with Thistle most notably when he was booked for allegedly making the sign of the cross as he left the field of play at half time during a match with Rangers. On the receiving end of some terrible racist abuse, a further caution led to a red card. On a much happier note he marked his Thistle debut with a spectacular goal against Motherwell, and the transfer fee paid to Walsall looked to be money well spent. Although his talent was never in question his work rate often was and he spent a long period an the sidelines out of favour after Murdo MacLeod took over. He did return to the side, scoring a number of important goals including Thistle's counter in the Rangers match referred to above, but his relationship with the manager was clearly strained culminating in being dropped for the second leg of the relegation play-off with Dundee United. Left Thistle at the end of that season and ended up playing non-league football in England. |
