Robert Gardner Houston was born on Saturday, 28th July, 1888, in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire.

The goalkeeper signed for George Easton's Thistle on Wednesday, 3rd January, 1912, having most recently been with Kilbarchan Athletic.

Aged 23, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 6th January, 1912, in a 3-0 win away to St Mirren in the SFL First Division.

In doing so, Robert joined the goalies' clean-sheet debutant's club.

He registered the last of his 6 clean-sheets on Wednesday, 1st May, 1912, in a 0-0 neutral-venue defeat (on corners) against Celtic in the Glasgow Charity Cup.

He played his last game for the club on Tuesday, 1st April, 1913, in a 3-2 defeat away to Third Lanark in the Glasgow & District Mid-Week League, having appeared as a Jag on 24 occasions.

His club-list included Kilbarchan Athletic, Partick Thistle, Abercorn and Johnstone.

Robert died on Sunday, 9th May, 1915, in Pas de Calais, aged 26.
