Robert Ferguson |
Robert Ferguson was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The defender signed for Thistle in October, 1894, having most recently been with Third Lanark. He made his first known appearance on Saturday, 3rd November, 1894, in a 3-1 friendly defeat at home to Linthouse. There were no known goals for Robert during his time with Thistle. He played his last known game for the club on Saturday, 14th March, 1896, in a 7-1 defeat away to Morton in the SFL Second Division, having appeared for the Thistle on at least 40 occasions. His club-list included Third Lanark, Partick Thistle and Morton. We don't know where or when Robert died. *

Ferguson, then a Third Lanark reserve, answered the call when Thistle were in need of a right back in October 1894. On the 27th of that month, he had a brilliant "debut" (in theory) when Thistle defeated Rangers by one goal to nil in front of 5,000 at Inchview. Both goalkeepers were in action early in the match and John Wilkie scored the only goal in 20 minutes. Play was equally tight after the break and Rangers applied the pressure but Robert, and the defence, stood firm. They had qualified for the Glasgow Cup final! Alas, Rangers protested that Thistle's goalie, Pat Smith, was ineligible, and a replay was ordered, striking the appearance from Robert's record. Reporting after the 4-2 League win over Cowlairs (5th January 1895) the Scottish Referee noted that Robert continued to fill the right back position with credit to both himself and Cathkin. The Firhill executive were clearly in agreement and his stay was extended. There were 23 appearances before the season was over, and a further 17 the following season. In May 1896, Robert made the switch over to Morton, who were Second Division rivals at that time. |
