Reid [ii] |
Reid (forename unknown) was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The defender first appeared for Thistle in December, 1894. He made his first known appearance on Saturday, 29th December, 1894, in a 4-1 friendly defeat away to Aberdeen FC. There were no known goals for Reid during his spell with Thistle. He played his third and last known game for the club on Saturday, 5th January, 1895, in a 4-2 win at home to Cowlairs in the SFL Second Division. His known club-list included only Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when Reid died. *

Reid played in two of the three games of Thistle New Year trip to the Highlands in 1894-95, and also seen some League action in the days which followed. In what seems like a super-experimental 8 days he played successively at centre half, right back and inside right. The tour began with a visit to the Chanonry Grounds on Saturday 29th December 1894 to take on Aberdeen FC. Played in several inches of snow, sleet and a gale, Thistle were outplayed by the home side, who had already hit the bar before taking a 2-goal lead at h-t. Thistle made little use of the wind in the 2nd half. They had a goal disallowed for off-side then an og reduced the lead but 2 more goals made for an emphatic win. Reid was given a rest for 2-1 win at Inverness Thistle 3 days later, but he was back in Aberdeen on the Wednesday for the visit to Victoria Bridge Grounds; Victoria United vs. Partick Thistle. It was an entertaining game on a snow-covered pitch, a ding-dong affair until Thistle took the lead (10) through Willie Freebairn then John Wilkie made it 2-0. Victoria went close several times but John Proudfoot added a third before half-time. United reduced the lead (49) before a dubiously off-side goal (scorer unknown) made it 4-1. Back in Glasgow 3 days later, our man took up a role in the forward line for the visit of Cowlairs to Inchview on League business. Again, it was an exciting match. There were chances for both teams before John Proudfoot opened for Thistle, latching on to a Willie Freebairn pass. By half-time it was 3-0. Thistle continued to press and they scored again (a Freebairn hat-trick) then they missed two great chances. Cowlairs scored 2 late on to make it look closer than it really was. Reid remains a mystery man, but we can say that he had a lively spell as a Jag. |
