Les Mottram
  • Formally Leslie William Mottram, born on 5th March, 1951.
  • Most commonly listed as Les Mottram; also seen as L. Mottram & L. W. Mottram.
  • Briefly played for Airdrieonians. Served as a FIFA referee from 1991 to 1996. Failed infamously when he completely missed a perfectly good Dundee United goal at Firhill on 13th February, 1993. With United leading 1-0, Paddy Connolly's strike just before half-time hit the net stanchion and rebounded out, fooling the man-in-the-middle that it had hit the post. Compounding the error, the referee also missed the fact that Thistle defender Martin Clark caught the rebound and handed it back to goalie Andy Murdoch. To everyone in the ground, Mottram looked ridiculous as he waved play on. Perhaps even more amazingly, on the BBC's 'Off The Ball' many years later, standside linesman, Dougie Smith, admitted that he knew it was a goal but followed protocol in not contradicting the referee. Connolly was denied his first senior hat-trick, but his side's 4-0 win softened the blow. Goalposts were redesigned afterwards; old-skool rigid stanchions would soon become a thing of the past. Refereed in the Japanese J. League from 1996 to 2001.

crime-count.png Crime Count notes
penalty.png 5 pts are allocated for a penalty, in favour of whichever team is awarded the kick. Our data is comprehensive from 1891-92 (the season of introduction) to date.
yellow-card.png 1 pt is allocated for any given player's first yellow card, the point being in Thistle's favour when an opponent is booked and vice-versa. Second yellows are always ignored as superfluous. We introduce the yellow card count from season 1997-98 onwards as our records are comprehensive and meaningful from that season onwards. Official cautions began in the 1940s and we continue to (casually) build such data with a view to, perhaps, setting an earlier date for our yellow card analysis. Incidentally, the actual yellow card was first introduced to the Scottish domestic game in season 1979-80.
red-card.png 4 pts are allocated for sending offs, the points being in Thistle's favour when an opponent is sent-off and vice-versa. Our crime count database is 'open for business' from 1886-87 onwards as this was the first season that the English FA decreed that the referee had the power to send a player off, although the first known in a Scottish game wasn't until a season later and the first known in a Thistle game wasn't until 1891. Our data is comprehensive from then to the present day. As per the yellow, the actual red card was first introduced to the Scottish domestic game in season 1979-80.
