Bio Extra

Smith was Thistle's #1 from August 1894, but it all went horribly wrong just over a year later in a Scottish Qualifying cup tie at Broomfield. The match was tense at 0-0 and the late flash point was when a shot hit the bar and bounced back into play. The ref gave a goal at which point Smith threatened the referee, Mr. McIntyre, and struck him on the head at f-t. He was later suspended for 6 months. Thistle won their appeal to have the match replayed on the grounds that Airdrie fielded ineligible players and won 4-3! During his period of suspension it was reported that he was moving to Lancashire on account of work and that he would play for Burnley in season 1896-97, but this never came to pass. He started that next season with Thistle but moved to Bolton Wanderers in November 1896.
