 Pat Smith was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The goalkeeper signed for Thistle on Tuesday, 7th August, 1894, having most recently been with Duntocher Harp. He made his first known appearance on Saturday, 11th August, 1894, in a 5-2 win at home to Dundee Wanderers in the SFL Second Division. Pat kept his first known clean-sheet on Saturday, 27th April, 1895, in a 6-0 friendly win at home to Neilston. He registered the last of his 4 known clean-sheets on Saturday, 26th September, 1896, in a 2-0 win at home to Royal Albert in the Scottish Qualifying Cup. He played his last known game for the club on Saturday, 7th November, 1896, in a 5-2 defeat at home to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Qualifying Cup, having appeared for the Thistle on at least 52 occasions. His club-list included Duntocher Harp, Partick Thistle and Bolton Wanderers. We don't know where or when Pat died. *

 Smith was Thistle's #1 from August 1894, but it all went horribly wrong just over a year later in a Scottish Qualifying cup tie at Broomfield. The match was tense at 0-0 and the late flash point was when a shot hit the bar and bounced back into play. The ref gave a goal at which point Smith threatened the referee, Mr. McIntyre, and struck him on the head at f-t. He was later suspended for 6 months. Thistle won their appeal to have the match replayed on the grounds that Airdrie fielded ineligible players and won 4-3! During his period of suspension it was reported that he was moving to Lancashire on account of work and that he would play for Burnley in season 1896-97, but this never came to pass. He started that next season with Thistle but moved to Bolton Wanderers in November 1896. |
