Bio Extra

The Inter City League was often used for experimental teamlines and that how Maughan got his game for Thistle in early April 1903. A decent 3,000 were at Meadowside for the visit of Rangers. “Thistle infused an amount of dash in their play that seemed to astonish the Rangers” reported the Herald. Against the wind Rangers were seldom in it and their keeper was constantly in action. Kennedy “walked through the first goal” (46). Rangers stirred themselves and it was end to end stuff until big Sam Kennedy scored his second for a fine 2-0 win.

For the game, both the Herald and the Record put Thistle's no. 3, “Wilson”, in inverted commas. We interpret this trialist as Maughan (Duntocher Hibs) as revealed in the Daily Record report of 7th April which stated: “Maughan of Duntocher Hibs, who helped Thistle against Rangers, has signed.” John Litster notes that there was a “J. Maughan” who played for Maryhill in 1889-90, so that's one possible candidate. The press quotes a “G. Maughan” as playing for Duntocher Hibs in 1900-01.
