Thistle were ahead twice in this match through two rare goals from Archibald - a left foot volley (27) and a right foot shot from outside the box (79). A 30-yard free-kick (37) and a header from a corner (80) earned 3rd top Hearts a point. Throwing away leads was becoming a worrying habit.

JAGS AND HEARTS ALL SQUARE. Partick Thistle are still looking for their first home league win of the season after an entertaining draw with Hearts at Firhill. Alan Archibald celebrated his 200th game for the Maryhill men scoring both goals for the home side. On both occasions the midfielder put the home side in front. However, Jean-Louis Valois and Scott Severin each netted to draw Hearts level. It was a very open, if bad-tempered, match with several goal-scoring chances for both sides. Partick made one change from the side which eased past Berwick in the CIS Cup in midweek, Scott McLean replacing the injured Paul Walker. Hearts lost the services of Irish striker Andy Kirk through injury and Graham Weir came in as a replacement.

After a cagey opening, Hearts began to get a foothold in the match and enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure. Recent midfielder recruit Phil Stamp tried his luck with a volley from 25 yards after latching onto a Jean-Louis Valois corner. In the 17th minute Thistle had an escape when keeper Kenny Arthur fumbled a high cross under pressure from Weir but luckily the ball broke to a yellow and red jersey and the danger was cleared. Moments later Jags midfielder Martin Hardie made Hearts keeper Roddie McKenzie save from just under his bar with a header from 16 yards. In the 24th minute, McKenzie blocked a Hardie close-range shot after a prolonged goalmouth scramble. Three minutes later Thistle took the lead when Archibald thumped home a wonderful goal after Steven Pressley had headed clear a dangerous cross from Jamie Buchan. The Hearts were being stretched as the Jags, growing in confidence, threatened to add to their lead on several occasions. But against the run of play the visitors equalised with a sensational free-kick from Valois. In the 38th minute, Thistle's Alex Burns brought down Alan Maybury 30 yards from goal, and the Frenchman stepped to curl a lovely strike into the top corner.

After the interval the home side again took the initiative and soon had Hearts on the back foot. However, the Edinburgh side almost sneaked ahead when a Steven Boyack shot from the edge of the box was goal bound until it deflected off Jags defender Scott Paterson for a corner. In the 79th minute it looked good for the home side when Archibald grabbed his second with another tremendous drive from the edge of the box. However, two minutes later, Hearts equalised for the second time when Scott Severin headed home a Valois corner. In the 88th minute, as the home side pressed for the winner, Jamie Mitchell drew a great save from McKenzie with a 20 yard drive.
