FOR the third year in succession, in an achievement which is beginning to emulate that of the Rough era, Partick obtained the point they required to put the club beyond relegation. And, as if to underline the similarities, it was the present goalkeeper and fans’ player of the year, Walker, who ensured a draw with another important save in the dying moments. But the celebrations could be tinged by what appeared to be a farewell gesture from hero Charnley to the fans in what was the team’s last home game. He raced out of the tunnel ahead of his mates to salute the crowd before kick-off, and repeated his lap of applause at the end.

We might have expected a more passionate affair had Partick’s Taylor not produced a headed goal-line clearance in the second minute when a corner presented Weir with a marvellous opportunity. Falkirk were the most penetrating, however, and a 25th minute side-step from Fulton set up a fine shot from outside the area which dipped before narrowly clearing the crossbar. Clark’s outswinging crosses had been Falkirk’s most persistent approach during this phase, with Kirk heading weakly past from the best just six yards out.

The one distinguishing feature of the clash, meanwhile, had seen referee Roy from Aberdeen subjected to undue pressure at the slightest deviation from the supporters’ pre-determined plan. Undoubtedly the interval scores were responsible for the extra purpose on display thereafter, although it was still a case of throwing men behind the ball for Partick. In one delightful Falkirk move a Johnston cross resulted in Kirk heading against the bar. Walker pulled off an outstanding stop from the same player soon afterwards, and Partick held out for the draw they needed.
