PARTICK’S loyal followers, the most patient and civilised in the land, have at long last a reason for exultation. Their new striker, Rod McDonald, signed on Friday from Walsall, was not only part creator of their first goal and scorer of a stunning second, but also the cause of eager anticipation every time he was in the vicinity of the ball. Motherwell, perhaps sub-consciously affected by the prospect of their return European tie against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, came fully to life only when they were two goals behind. Eventually, the mighty influence of Martin and the trickery of Davies inspired an impressive recovery, but a more total commitment will be essential on Wednesday. When Partick scored, the goal was engineered by the mobility of McDonald. Finding space on the left, he released McWilliams for a drive which Woods diverted into the path of the predatory Grant. Motherwell’s response was prompt. McKinnon measured his cross to perfection, but Coyne headed against the bar.

The second half began in spectacular fashion. As Grant and Martin rose together the ball broke to McDonald who, from the corner of the box, volleyed it high over Woods. Motherwell’s reaction was more effective this time. Davies delivered a long drive which Nelson, out of his goal, touched but could not stop. Three minutes from time, Kirk was pulled down in the box and Coyne’s penalty was consummately taken. Thwarted time and again, he would not have scored otherwise.
