With little at stake it was not surprising that Partick Thistle and Dundee United produced a dull game at Firhill Park. Thistle were two goals up at half-time, Whitelaw and Smith having scored, but 10 minutes after the interval Carlyle, now playing at centre forward, shot past Niven, and United, without exerting any great pressure, were back in the game. The outstanding moment of the game, however, ended United’s revival when Whitelaw ran up the right wing and crossed hard into goal, and McBride, with a prodigious leap, headed the ball well beyond Davie. Whitelaw added a fourth,a nd Gillespie shot a second for the visitors, from what looked an offside position. Mr Stewart, who had an excellent game, adjudged however, that the scorer had been onside when the ball had been played. Duffy was the outstanding player in the home team, and Carlyle and Gillespie were the most industrious members of a lacklustre United team.
