 John McMenamin (officialy adapted to McMenemy by the time of his death) was born on Wednesday, 25th April, 1906, in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire. The 5' 6 (10st 6lbs) forward signed for Donald Turner's Thistle on Thursday, 3rd September, 1936, having most recently been with Motherwell. Aged 30, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 5th September, 1936, in a 2-0 defeat at home to Aberdeen in the SFL First Division. John scored his first goal for Thistle on Tuesday, 8th September, 1936, in a 5-1 win at home to Queen's Park in the SFL First Division. He scored the last of his 6 goals on Saturday, 21st August, 1937, in a 3-0 win at home to Kilmarnock in the SFL First Division. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 2nd October, 1937, in a 3-2 win at home to Queen's Park in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 44 occasions. His club-list included St Anthony's, St Roch's, Celtic, Motherwell, Partick Thistle and St Mirren. John died on Saturday, 5th February, 1983, in Glasgow, aged 76. |
 John McMenemy joined Thistle at the start of the 1936-37 season from Motherwell, where the inside forward had been a first team regular. The Jags paid £1,000 for him. He came from a footballing family, and he and Jimmy (Napoleon) McMenemy (a member of the Thistle 1921 Scottish Cup winning side) became Thistle's third father-and-son pairing. His brother, Harry, also played professionally, for Newcastle and Dundee. The former Southampton manager Laurie McMenemy is a distant relative. John played for junior sides St Anthony’s and St Roch’s before joining his father’s former side, Celtic, in December 1925. He wasn’t a regular in the Celtic side, but played in the 1926-27 Scottish Cup Final where Celtic beat East Fife 3-1. He joined Motherwell in 1928, and saw more first team action at Fir Park. He made another Scottish Cup Final appearance in 1931 when Motherwell played Celtic, but this time he was on the losing side as Celtic won a replay 4-2, after a 2-2 draw where John scored Motherwell’s 2nd. The Fir Park side won the SFL 1st Division in 1931-32, the only time they have won the top League championship. In a purple patch for Motherwell, they also appeared in the 1932-33 Scottish Cup Final, where they lost 1-0 to Celtic. John started his first match in Thistle colours 2 days after signing, a 2-0 League defeat at home to Aberdeen in September 1936. John was, in the main, deployed as an inside left during his time at Firhill. The seasons 1936-37 and 1937-38 weren’t campaigns where the Jags set the heather on fire. Thistle lost the 1936-37 Glasgow Cup Final to Rangers (6-1) after an initial 2-2 draw. John didn’t play in the 6-1 fixture, but was one of the scorers in the initial 2-2 draw. He left Thistle for St Mirren having played in 43 matches. He was capped for Scotland on a single occasion – replacing his brother Harry who had to pull out of the side injured. Scotland lost the match against Wales 3-2 in Cardiff in 1933. John also appeared for the Scottish League on 3 occasions. He passed away early in 1983, aged 76. |
