 John Sneddon Laurie was born on Sunday, 30th March, 1919, in Cambusnethan, North Lanarkshire. The midfielder signed for Donald Turner's Thistle on Saturday, 4th January, 1941, having most recently been with Dundee. Aged 21, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 11th January, 1941, in a 2-1 defeat at home to Hibernian in the Southern League. There were no goals for John during his time with Thistle. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 5th April, 1941, in a 1-0 defeat at home to Celtic in the Southern League Cup, having appeared as a Jag on 10 occasions. John's club-list included Newarthill Hearts, Dundee, Partick Thistle, Motherwell, Rangers and Queen of the South. John died on Thursday, 11th February, 1982, in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, aged 62. |
 Right half John Laurie joined Thistle on 4 January 1941 from Dundee. He made 8 appearances for Thistle during his 3 month stay with the club, 4 Southern League matches, and 4 Southern League Cup starts. Thistle got to the semi-final of the Cup, going out to Rangers at that stage. His Dundee career covered seasons 1936-37, 1937-38 and 1938-39, his football career interrupted by war. He made a total of 57 competitive starts for the club, scoring 7 goals. He enlisted early in the war, and was promoted to the rank of Major, giving “distinguished service”. John played in a number of Service matches, including a match between a Scotland XI versus a Army (Scottish Command) XI at Dens Park on 25 January 1941, with the Scotland XI winning 1-0 with Robert Flavell of Airdrieonians getting the only goal. He played in a further match between the same teams at Pittodrie on 19 April 1941, the Scotland XI again winning with a 2-1 victory. Thistle player Austin Collier also played for the Army (Scottish Command side), with Peter Curran appearing for the Scotland XI. Stanley Matthews appeared as a guest for the Scotland XI, having been recently posted to Scotland. John went on to play for Rangers and Motherwell, before having a post-war career at Queen of the South. Away from the football, John worked as a quantity surveyor.
