John Couper Spence was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. *

The goalkeeper signed for Thistle in 1896.

He made his first known appearance on Saturday, 7th March, 1896, in a 4-2 defeat away to Airdrieonians in the SFL Second Division.

John kept his first known clean-sheet on Saturday, 13th February, 1897, in a 6-0 win away to Motherwell in the SFL Second Division.

He registered the last of his 10 known clean-sheets on Saturday, 20th January, 1900, in a 1-0 friendly win at home to Port Glasgow Athletic.

He played his last known game for the club on Saturday, 3rd March, 1900, in a 4-1 defeat at home to Kilmarnock in the Western League, having appeared for the Thistle on at least 78 occasions.

His known club-list included only Partick Thistle.

John died in October, 1932. *
