 James Rutherford was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The forward appeared for Donald Turner's Thistle in May, 1931, possibly as a guest with a view to signing, whilst a Queen of the South player. He made his only appearance on Wednesday, 6th May, 1931, in a 1-0 defeat away to Rangers in the Glasgow Charity Cup. There were no goals for Jimmy in his one-off appearance for Thistle. His club-list included St Cuthbert Wanderers, Dalbeattie Star, Queen of the South, Partick Thistle, Stranraer and Alloa Athletic. We don't know where or when Jimmy died. *

 When he made his appearance at Firhill, Jimmy was slap-bang in the middle of a sensational two-season run at Palmerston, averaging a goal-per-game in well over 60 games. His 1931-32 season-tally of 41 competitive goals stood as the club-record until Stephen Dobbie usurped him with the phenomenal tally of 43 goals in Queen's centenary season, 2018-19. It was future Thistle manager Davie Meiklejohn who opposed Jimmy in his guest stint at Firhill; an opponent who was literally too tough to handle. The centre-forward never hit the heady heights of his two season high again, although he did net 8 League goals in his 8 games for Alloa Athletic at the beginning of 1935. |
