James Paul was born on the 1st January 1880 to 3rd April 1880 in Partick, Glasgow. *

The forward signed for Thistle in the late 1890s.

Aged 18 or 19, he made his first known appearance on Saturday, 18th February, 1899, in a 2-1 win away to Morton in the Scottish Cup.

James scored his only known goal for Thistle on Saturday, 25th February, 1899, in a 7-3 defeat away to Port Glasgow Athletic in the Scottish Cup.

He played his last known game for the club on Saturday, 21st October, 1899, in a 2-1 defeat away to Ayr in the SFL Second Division, having appeared for the Thistle on at least 8 occasions.

His club-list included Partick Thistle and Hamilton Academical.
