James McCaig

James McCaig was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. *

The midfielder signed for George Easton's Thistle on Monday, 14th April, 1913, having most recently been with Bellshill Athletic.

He made his debut appearance on Saturday, 16th August, 1913, in a 2-1 win at home to Motherwell in the SFL First Division.

There were no goals for James during his time with Thistle.

He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 2nd May, 1914, in a 2-1 neutral-venue defeat against Third Lanark in the Glasgow Charity Cup, having appeared as a Jag on 23 occasions.

His club-list included Bellshill Athletic, Partick Thistle, Wishaw Thistle, Bathgate, Armadale and Royal Albert.

This half-back excelled at Bellshill Athletic and was rewarded with a Junior Scotland cap in April 1913. Playing in front of 20,000 at Firhill he was singled out as being "in a class of his own" but could not prevent the Scots from going down by 2 goals to 1 to the Birmingham & District FA team who represented England. This earned him a crack at the senior level, and Partick Thistle immediately signed him up for 1913-14. James made more than 20 appearances in his first season as a professional but, although he remained on the books, his name disappeared from all the reported action the following season.

After being placed on the 'Open to Transfer' list in the close season of 1915, James moved on to Wishaw Thistle. The officials at Bathgate were very enterprising in the close season of 1916, bringing a great many senior pros to their club, including two former Jags in the shape of John Stevenson and James McCaig who had played together at Thistle in 1913-14. James was playing in the Central League with Armadale at the turn of the new decade and was last heard of with Royal Albert in 1921.
