Bio Extra

Sometimes known as J. B. McAlpine or Mutt McAlpine, James played as an inside-left for Queen's Park in the Scottish Football League. He is Queen's Park's record goalscorer and second-highest appearance-maker, having scored 192 goals in 547 appearances in all competitions. As far as J.B.'s tenuous status as a Jag goes, 10,000 were at Firhill on Tuesday, 27th April, 1926 for Tom Crichton's testimonial. Five from the QP were drafted in for a hybrid eleven. Willie Salisbury scored an early spectacular goal from a John Miller cross, but the rest of Glasgow Select rallied and led 2-1 at h-t. Taking their chances was the only difference between the teams. QP player Robert Gillespie made it 2-5 (87) but the score was flattering.

Despite being ineligible for the full Scottish international team under the rules of the time due to being born in England, McAlpine represented Scotland at amateur level, and also represented the Scottish League XI and the Glasgow Football Association (five appearances in the annual match against Sheffield), selection for which was not dependent on birthplace. James later served on the Queen's Park committee, and as president. In September 2013, Queen's Park's new youth and community building at Lesser Hampden was named the "J. B. McAlpine Pavilion".
