Bio Extra

The son of William Logan and Agnes Logan (née Lochhead).

The teenage wing half began played in the juvenile grade with Barrhead Fereneze before joining Queen’s Park in 1903. He made his Scottish League debut at Dundee that August. James is perhaps best remembered for his spells in English and Scottish League football with Aston Villa (seven seasons from 1905-06) and Rangers (five seasons from 1912-13), winning the national league title with both clubs and making over 100 appearances for each. He had been club captain at Villa in 1907, when he was described as “a sure kick and a player of great resource”. He represented the Scottish League XI once in 1913 (a 4-1 victory over the Football League at Hampden), and made one unofficial wartime appearance for Scotland in 1916 (a 4-3 defeat to England at Goodison Park). He guested for Thistle once in the springtime of 1917 and left his mark by scoring, although it wasn't enough to prevent a 2-1 League defeat to Queen's Park at Hampden.

Logan had two brothers who were also noted footballers. Elder sibling Alec, a forward, was a teammate of James at Aston Villa between 1907 and 1909 and also played for the Scottish League XI before being killed in the First World War. Younger sibling Tommy, a defender, played in national cup finals with Falkirk in Scotland and Chelsea in England and received one full cap for Scotland.

James passed away at Johnstone hospital shortly after his 84th birthday. His son, William, signed the death register entry.
