 Walter James Baird was born on Thursday, 18th December, 1873, in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. The forward signed for Thistle on Monday, 9th June, 1902, having most recently been with Benburb. Aged 28, he made his only appearance on Saturday, 13th September, 1902, in a 3-0 win at home to Normal Athletic in the Glasgow Cup. There were no goals for James in his one-off appearance for Thistle. His club-list included Benburb, St Mirren and Partick Thistle. James died on Friday, 27th March, 1942, in Pelaw-on-Tyne, County Durham, aged 68.

 Described as a crack outside left when at Benburb. Tried for St Mirren in April 1902 before signing for Thistle a couple of months later. His only game was at Meadowside on 13th September when Thistle got their Glasgow Cup campaign underway with a 3-0 win over Normal Athletic. Thistle, with a strong breeze at their backs, went ahead through Conner (10). The amateurs tried hard and their keeper had a fine game but Duncanson scored the 2nd before half-time. Conner scored his 2nd from the penalty spot and it was all Thistle until the end but it remained 3-0. Thistle Reserves were hardly active in James's only season, so it's unlikely he was around for long. Work as a shipping clerk had taken him down to Tyneside before he played for Thistle, and he returned there with his father, Walter, and sister, Margaret Ellen. There, he would marry Mary Ann who became a widow in March 1942. |
