1971 - SFL SECOND DIVISION

Mon-19-Apr-1971 [h] W2-1 Queen's Park (SFL Second Division - game 35)

Confirmed as champions. Understandably tense, Thistle made it hard for themselves. Queens were given too much space early on and they took the lead but a tremendous shot from 18 yards by McQuade made it 1-1. He could have had more before Lawrie got the winning goal (25).

1971 - LEAGUE CUP

Sat-23-Oct-1971 [n] W4-1 Celtic (League Cup Final)

β€œSizzling Thistle roast Celts”. β€œThistle won the trophy…with a blistering display of power football”. β€œThistle were dynamic on the break, calm in defence” (ET). β€œBarren years end for Thistle with emphatic cup win” (GH). Four goals in the first 37 minutes gave Thistle a rare major trophy win. The bookies rated Celtic as 1/5 odds-on to win, but Rae (10), Lawrie (15), McQuade (29) and Bone (37) got the goals in one of the biggest upsets ever seen in Scottish football.
