![]() This young centre forward, who could also be deployed as a left winger, was a product of Shotts Bon Accord, and had a busy time as a trialist in 1951 turning out for Partick Thistle, Queen of the South and Motherwell Reserves. In April 1952 he was on trial at Alloa Athletic, but still no deal transpired. He did finally make his senior debut with Albion Rovers in 1952-53, but only made 2 league appearances and was back in the juniors with Blantyre Victoria by the end of the season. With over 40 goals for the Vics he had a trial with Airdrie in April 1954, but signed for East Fife a couple of months later, playing mainly in the reserves during his time in Fife. Ian was re-instated to the juniors with Blantyre Vics in August 1957, but turned senior again with Dumbarton in March 1958 where he had a decent run of form, scoring 12 goals in his 13 league appearances. Despite this, he was freed in April 1959. He made an adventurous move in the close season of '59, signing for Weymouth where he made 14 appearances in the Western League and scored 12 goals. There, he played alongside another ex-Jag in the form of goalkeeper Freddie Renucci, both men lasting just a few months for non-footballing reasons. There was only 1 first team appearance though and the contract was cancelled by mutual consent that Christmas, the main reason being that Ian, an engineer to trade, was unable to find satisfactory full-time employment in the town. He returned to Scotland, but his next footballing move - if at all - is unclear. His brother Eric, a left back, played in the junior game with Royal Albert and Blantyre Vics. |
