Bio Extra

Iain came through the youth system at Oldham and was doing well on loan at Conference outfit Leigh Genesis in early 2000 when John Lambie tied him up on an alternative offer at Thistle in the springtime of that year. It didn't go as well as expected for Iain at Firhill, and Leigh Genesis were only too pleased to sign him permanently for 2000-01. He signed for his adopted hometown team, Morecambe, two years later, before running into some health trouble a few years later. Iain was only 26 when high blood pressure was flagged up after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury at Morecambe which resulted in him going to hospital in Shropshire for treatment. Unable to operate owing to unusually high blood pressure, doctors sent him for scans and blood tests at Royal Preston Hospital which eventually revealed a form of kidney disease called IgA nephropathy.

Iain then played part time football with Lancaster City FC, and subsequently retrained as a heating engineer in 2007. Under the care of doctors at Royal Preston, who he says were ‘brilliant’ throughout his years of living with kidney disease, Iain saw his condition deteriorate, until it got to the point in 2019, almost 13 years after his initial diagnosis where his kidney function was low enough to mean he was eligible for a transplant. Luckily, his kindhearted dad, Douglas, stepped in and became a donor in November 2019. Iain says regular check ups and the care at both Manchester Royal Infirmary where he had the op, and Royal Preston Hospital where he was treated before and afterwards, were brilliant.
