Bio Extra

As the back of the Mitchells cigarette card photo tells it, he was one of the few players to have been a member of the Queen's Park club who retained their status after leaving for other clubs. He was with them for two seasons from 1927-28, before joining Kilmarnock for a couple of seasons.

Johnny Jackson was an immovable object between the sticks at Firhill for several years so George, an amateur, had to contend himself with a place in the second eleven when he arrived at the club in the late springtime of 1932. His claim to Thistle fame is that he was the man who ended Johnny Jackson's awesome record run of 313 consecutive competitive games, 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933. It was the 1st April 1933 (no joke!) when George took his place for the 7-2 win over East Stirlingshire at Firs Park. Where was Johnny that day? Helping Scotland to a 2-1 win over England at Hampden Park; there were 134,710 witnesses!

George moved on to Airdrie at the tail end of 1933. Owing to business, he was sometimes unable to travel with the Airdrie team, but was regarded as their regular goalkeeper. It was said that he was powerfully built, and particularly good with the ball in the air. When in possession, very few forwards were strong enough to upset his balance.
