George Shaw |
George Shaw was born on Monday, 10th February, 1969, in Glasgow. The 5' 7 (9st 2lbs) forward signed for John Lambie's Thistle on Tuesday, 11th June, 1991, having most recently been with St Mirren. Aged 22, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 27th July, 1991, in a 4-0 friendly win away to Inverness Select. George scored his first two goals for Thistle on Saturday, 7th September, 1991, in a 3-1 win away to Ayr United in the SFL First Division. He scored the last of his 28 goals on Tuesday, 13th February, 2001, in a 4-0 win away to Clydebank in the SFL Second Division. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 21st April, 2001, in a 1-0 defeat at home to Arbroath in the SFL Second Division, having clocked up 122 appearances as a Jag. George's club-list included St Mirren, Partick Thistle, Dundee, Dunfermline Athletic, Ross County, Clydebank, Stranraer, Forfar Athletic, Arbroath, Shettleston Juniors and Cumbernauld United. |
Without any doubt one of the key Thistle players of the 1990's. Joined Thistle as part of the elaborate swap deal that took Chic Charnley and Davie Elliot to Love Street and Shaw and Mark McWalter to Firhill. His 10 goals in season 92/93 went a long way in helping Thistle to promotion to the Premier League in his first season with Thistle, but it was his form in the first few months of the following season that really brought Shaw to the eye. He netted four times as Thistle defeated Dundee 6-3 at Firhill and scored both the Thistle goals in the famous 2-1 win over Celtic at Parkhead and eventually finished the season with 11 goals. His partnership with Gerry Britton was an extremely fruitful one and the Thistle fans were not best pleased when the two players left to join Dundee. Shaw did sign off his Thistle career in the best possible way scoring the only goal as Thistle defeated Celtic 1-0, this time at Firhill. Went on to score many goals in the lower divisions in Scotland. |
