 Donald Frederick McVicar was born on Tuesday, 6th November, 1962, in Perth. The 5' 9 (11st 12lbs) defender signed for John Lambie's Thistle on Saturday, 29th February, 1992, having most recently been with St Johnstone. Aged 29, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 29th February, 1992, in a 2-0 win at home to Dundee in the SFL First Division. Don scored his only two goals for Thistle on the same day; on Saturday, 18th July, 1992, in a 3-1 friendly win away to Buckie Thistle. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 1st May, 1993, in a 3-1 defeat away to Dundee United in the SFL Premier Division, having appeared as a Jag on 54 occasions. His club-list included St Johnstone, Tranmere Rovers, Montrose, Partick Thistle, Airdrieonians, Ayr United, Forfar Athletic and Arbroath. Don died on Tuesday, 31st January, 2006, in Dundee, aged 43. |
 Prior to signing for Thistle in the second half of the 91/92 season, Don's most infamous Firhill encounter came when he was sent off while playing with Montrose by his namesake referee Don McVicar. Not exactly the most popular player with the Thistle fans prior to his arrival at the club due to on unfortunate incident at McDiarmid Park during a St Johnstone Thistle match, he soon won the Thistle fans over after he joined the club. He was an ever present in the promotion run in, and was outstanding as Thistle just pipped Hamilton for the second promotion spot behind Dundee thanks in no small measure to the parsimony of the Thistle defence. With Thistle expected to struggle in the Premier Leaque, McVicar continued to perform to an extremely high standard and particularly seemed to enjoy Thistle's four victories over Dundee during the course of that season. Who, for example, can forget him sitting, a la Jim Baxter, on the ball in front of the Dundee fans? |
