1971 - SFL SECOND DIVISION
Confirmed as champions. Understandably tense, Thistle made it hard for themselves. Queens were given too much space early on and they took the lead but a tremendous shot from 18 yards by McQuade made it 1-1. He could have had more before Lawrie got the winning goal (25). |

1971 - LEAGUE CUP
“Sizzling Thistle roast Celts”. “Thistle won the trophy…with a blistering display of power football”. “Thistle were dynamic on the break, calm in defence” (ET). “Barren years end for Thistle with emphatic cup win” (GH). Four goals in the first 37 minutes gave Thistle a rare major trophy win. The bookies rated Celtic as 1/5 odds-on to win, but Rae (10), Lawrie (15), McQuade (29) and Bone (37) got the goals in one of the biggest upsets ever seen in Scottish football. |
