● Archie Nimmo, 1960s (JK)

born in Scotland

Archibald Nimmo was born on Monday, 12th August, 1940, in Drumlemble, Argyll and Bute.

The forward signed for David Meiklejohn's Thistle on Monday, 3rd August, 1959, having most recently been with Drumlemble.

Aged 19, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 2nd January, 1960, in a 2-1 win away to Third Lanark in the SFL First Division.

That day, Archie became a member of our scoring debutant's club.

He scored the last of his 5 goals on Monday, 22nd August, 1960, in a 5-1 win at home to Queen's Park in the Glasgow Cup.

That turned out to be his last game for the club, having appeared as a Jag on 7 occasions.

His club-list included Drumlemble, Partick Thistle, St Mirren, Shettleston Juniors and Cambuslang Rangers.

Bio Extra

Archie could play at either centre-forward or outside left, and the Argyllshire teenager signed for Thistle in time for season 1959-60. Although a mainstay of the reserves, Archie did manage 6 appearances for the first team that term. He had a nice opening run in January 1960, with a 2-1 win away to Third Lanark, a 1-0 win at home to Aberdeen and a 1-1 draw away to Rangers, all in the league. Archie's goals ensured the two wins! He saw Scottish Cup action at the end of that month too, the Jags progressing after a 2-0 win at Bayview in the 1st Round. A 5-1 league defeat to Kilmarnock seems to have been a killer and Archie was back in the reserves.

In August 1960, a hat-trick for the reserves in a 6-0 League Cup win over Third Lanark was rewarded with another chance in the first team a few days later, and Thistle ran out 5-1 winners at Firhill as they opened their Glasgow Cup campaign for the season. Despite scoring (his 5th in 7 games), there would be no further first-team action for Archie, and he therefore carries the marvellous distinction of scoring in both his debut and finale! He made the switch to St Mirren in November 1960, but failed to make an impact there, and soon dropped down to the juniors level. He played with Shettleston and moved to Cambuslang Rangers in July 1963, in a swap deal for left winger James Cannovan.

In February 2024, we were pleased to hear from Archie's niece, Jan, who kindly scanned a fine Thistle Reserves photo from season 1959-60 (see 'Gallery' tab). Archie is only partially sighted these days, and we wish him all the best - it's always nice to hear from our old boys!
