born in Scotland

Allan Brown was born on Wednesday, 23rd March, 1898, in Maryhill, Glasgow.

The 5' 6 (10st 7lbs) forward signed for George Easton's Thistle in August, 1925, having most recently been with Raith Rovers.

Aged 27, he made his debut appearance on Wednesday, 26th August, 1925, in a 7-1 neutral-venue win against Queen's Park in a Benefit match.

That day, Allan achieved the rare feat of scoring a hat-trick on his debut!

Those turned out to be his only goals for Thistle.

He played his second and last game for the club on Saturday, 15th January, 1927, in a 3-2 defeat at home to Hamilton Academical in the SFL First Division.

His club-list included Parkhead, Maryhill, Clyde, Hamilton Academical, Raith Rovers, Partick Thistle, Arthurlie, Morton and Stranraer.

We don't know where or when Allan died. *

Bio Extra

Described as a centre forward with a good instinct for the off-chance. Played Army football as a teenager, before spells in the juniors with Parkhead and Maryhill. Aged 21, he signed for Clyde in May 1919 and was a major player for them in the five season which followed, scoring 64 goals in 135 League appearances. Kept that form going with Hamilton Accies in 1924-25 scoring 19 goals in 41 League & Scottish Cup appearances. Guested for Thistle in a charity match in August 1925, achieving the rare feat of scoring a debut hat-trick! Moved to Raith Rovers in November 1925 and had a terrific scoring ratio to finish the season, scoring 16 goals in 20 appearances. He didn't play so often in the next campaign, and switched to Thistle proper in December 1926. Played only once for the first team in his short spell, and briefly stepped down to the juniors with Arthurlie in August 1927, only to be snapped up by Morton a month later. Finished his playing career at Stranraer in the early 1930s.

On account of his service during WWI, Allan is included in our feature piece, The Partick Thistle returned →.

Historian's note: At lease one source (JL) reckons he was born in Perth, but he was listed as Maryhill-born on the mini-bio on the rear of his Rover card pic in 1922. We've based our finding on the card, and the identification is the only candidate. One curious doubt remains though; both of the aforementioned sources list him as Allan W. Brown, but no middle name appears on the birth register entry. Please get in touch → if you can shed any light on this mystery.
