 Allan Bowie was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The forward probably joined Thistle in 1877. He made his first known appearance on Saturday, 9th February, 1878, in a 3-0 friendly win at home to Camphill. That day, Allan became a member of our scoring debutant's club. He scored the last of his 3 known goals on Saturday, 30th November, 1878, in a 2-0 friendly win at home to Roseberry. He played his last known game for the club on Tuesday, 3rd January, 1882, in a 4-1 friendly win away to Angus, having appeared for the Thistle on at least 7 occasions. His known club-list included only Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when Allan died. *

 In the era when the vast majority of teamlines went unreported it's impossible to chart the prowess or otherwise for many of the players, but we do know that Allan appeared in the front line of the team on several occasions in the late 1870s and the early 1880s, playing in the public park days at Overnewton, as well as at the first private ground at Jordanvale. In those days, scorers, if anyone, were the ones most likely to get a namecheck, and Allan registered 3 goals in 1878, netting in a 3-0 home win over Camphill in February, and scoring both goals in a 2-0 win at Overnewton over Roseberry in November. In April 1879, Allan was a part of the historic Partick Thistle team which defeated Marchton 1-0 to lift the West of Scotland at First Hampden. As with many playing members of the club, Allan also assisted on committee duties, and must have impressed the others by his competence, for he was elected as treasurer at the AGM in May 1879. When he looked back on his Thistle career, Allan will have been proud to say that he took part in Partick Thistle's first-ever venture into the Scottish Cup in 1880. Victory over Jordanhill was secured on match day one, but Rangers proved to be too big a hurdle at the next stage. Allan played in the match at Kinning Park in front of Thistle's (then) record crowd of 1,000 spectators; Rangers 3 Partick Thistle 0. His last involvement on the playing front came in the New Year 1882 tour games (another first for the club at the time) in Tayside and Angus. |
