Bio Extra

We thought we had a picture of Alex, but Dundalk's Who's Who had fallen in to the trap of using the Vintage Footballer's image of Alex Sharp of Falkirk in 1937, historians of the world beware! Although he was reportedly born in Prestonpans circa 1918, we can see no such entry in Scotland's People, so further investigation and caution is required. Alex, a right-half specialist, started out as a youngster with Musselburgh Athletic, and signed for Hearts in the summer of 1936. He never did make the breakthrough at Tynecastle, and had a loan spell with Leith Athletic in 1937. Signed for Albion Rovers (then a top-flight side) where he as a near ever-present for four seasons from 1938-39. In the srpingtime of 1941, Donald Turner took him onboard to bolster the depleted Partick Thistle ranks.

His baptism of fire was in a Glasgow Charities Cup Quarter Final match at Firhill after which the end final score read: Partick Thistle 7 Clyde 5. The May 1941 match was played in front of an incredulous crowd of 5,000. Thistle were 5-0 up at one stage, but Clyde made a shock comeback. Willie Peat got a hat-trick and Peter McKennan got 2. Alex played in the more sedate 2-1 Semi Final victory over Celtic, before the 3-0 reversal to Rangers in the Final. He returned to the wee Rovers after his stint at Firhill.

Dundalk's Who's Who may not have the correct image, but they have some very nice information to share about his career finale at Oriel Park, where Alex played as an inside forward:

After a poor start to the 1946-47 season in the Dublin City Cup there were a number of recruitments for the Shield. On the recommendation of Jimmy Dykes, his former colleague from Hearts, inside forward Alex Sharp arrived at the beginning of October 1946. He went straight into the first team and a closing 5-match unbeaten run just failed by a point to catch Drumcondra. Runner up medals were secured on the last day with a 6-3 win over Shelbourne and Alex provided a hat trick to bring his Shield campaign record to 6 goals from 6 appearances. However, after a single point from the opening 3 League games Alex went home to Scotland for Christmas and never returned. Early in the season he had been with Albion Rovers, playing 1 game in the Scottish League Division B.

On account of his service during WWII, Alex is included in our feature piece, The Partick Thistle returned →.
