 A. Sommerville (forename unknown) was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * There was talk of the forward signing for George Easton's Thistle in December, 1913, but it never came to pass at that time. Later, he made his only appearance on Monday, 24th August, 1914, in a 2-2 draw at home to Celtic in a Benefit match. That day, Sommerville became a member of our scoring debutant's club. His club-list included Burnbank Athletic, Petershill and Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when Sommerville died. *

 This centre forward had many medals to his name at Petershill and won two Scottish Junior Cups in his time - both of them at Firhill! On 3rd June, 1911, he won it with Burnbank Athletic who defeated Petershill (ironically) by one goal to nil. 7,000 attended the game. 5 years later, a crowd of around 24,000 earned record receipts as Petershill defeated holders Parkhead by two goals to nil, our man being credited with the second counter. To the best of our knowledge he was a two club man throughout the 1910s; a few seasons at Burnbank were followed by several seasons at Petershill. Thistle were in for him at the tail end of 1913; the Dundee Courier (16/12/1913) reported that Thistle were "almost certain to sign Sommerville (centre-forward) and Sim (centre-half) from Petershill." We don't think that either of these two actually did sign in the end, but Sommerville was invited as a guest several months later, getting on the score sheet in a 2-2 draw with Celtic in a fund-raiser for the Partick Roman Catholic Schools. |
