2023-24 (Reserves)
The 149th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. Tue-19-Sep-2023 [a] L0-6 Queen's Park (League Cup Group 3 - game 1)
QPFC. 2.00pm, Lochinch. Storey, Ferrie, Stevenson, Monaghan, Williams, Williamson, McDonald, Falconer, Diack, Lyon, Taggart. (McKenna, McGinlay, Loney, Gaughan, McFadden.)
Thistle made little impression. Their first attempt on goal was by Diack (30). A minute later it was 1-0 then a second at a corner made it 2-0 just on half-time. Goals 66, 68, 75 and 88 made for a dreadful start to the competition.
2. Tue-07-Nov-2023 [a] L0-3 Livingston (League Cup Group 3 - game 2)
LIV. 2.00pm, Almondvale. Line-up as yet unsourced.
3. Tue-21-Nov-2023 [a] L1-4 Hibernian (League Cup Group 3 - game 3)
HFC. 2.00pm, Hibernian Training Centre. Line-up as yet unsourced. DIACK.
Hibs went ahead early on. Their keeper protected the lead as Thistle went close to equalising from a 1-on-1. A sweeping move was finished off for 2-0 soon after and a pen made it 3. A 25-yard effort was well saved by the Thistle keeper then a Diack tap-in at the far post made it look better but a shot at a corner made for a big win.
4. Tue-28-Nov-2023 [a] L0-6 Rangers (City of Glasgow Cup - section game)
RFC. 6.00pm, Auchenhowie. Storey, Taggart, Ferrie, Monaghan, McEwan, McKenna, Loney, Falconer, Turay, Horn, McGinlay. Listed subs: Cameron, Low, Gaughan, Lockhart, O'Donnell.
No contest. A poor pass out by Storey lead to the opener (10) then a through ball was slotted away for 2-0. A cut-back was tapped in then a composed finish came when Rangers got in behind the Thistle defence. A flowing move made it 5-0 (56) and the off-side trap was beaten for 6-0.
5. Tue-12-Dec-2023 [a] L0-10 Hamilton Academical (League Cup Group 3 - game 4)
PTFC. 2.00pm, New Douglas Park. Cameron, Monaghan, Stevenson, Williamson, McEwan, MacKenzie, McGinlay, Falconer, Diack, Lyon, Horn. Listed subs: Storey, Lockhart, O'Donnell, Gaughan, McKenna. The reserves fall to their second heaviest defeat of all-time. Only a 0-12 League Cup loss to Celtic in August 1968 being worse. 19 losses in the last 20. Only 1 win in the 2020s.
On paper this should never have been quite as one sided as it turned out to be, but Jags were 4 down at the break, one of which was a pen. Things just went from bad to worse in the second half and Thistle finished with 10 men. It was lambs to the slaughter and Joel Mumbongo (4) and Joe McGlynn (4) helped themselves to the feast.
6. Tue-09-Apr-2024 [h] L1-4 Queen's Park (City of Glasgow Cup - section game)
QPFC. 5.00pm, Petershill Park. Cameron, McFadden (Corr, 60), Ferrie (McEwan, 34), Johnston (Low, HT), Monaghan (O’Donnell 70), Lockhart, HORN, Falconer, Loney (Gaughan 60), Campbell, McKenna. Unused sub: Sloan.
Goals from McCormick (11 & 19) and Williamson (23) had Queen's Park on easy street. Jags fought and Campbell had a shot saved (55) before Horn slid in to take full advantage of a deflection (63), but Fiddes rolled in a pen (73) to extinguish any lingering comeback hopes. Prior to Thistle's goal, the team had scored only 1 of the last 46 in all competitions.
7. Tue-23-Apr-2024 [a] L3-6 Celtic (City of Glasgow Cup - section game)
CEL. 6.00pm, Lennoxtown, played behind closed doors. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Thistle finish 4th out of 4 in the group.
Pitching the 16/17-year-olds against Celtic B of the Lowland League is a mis-match, but the young Jags came back from 2-0 and 4-1 down to make it 4-3 at half-time thanks to Falconer (9), Horn (22) and Loney (33). It was a particularly frantic opening 15 minutes of action, with six of the nine goals of the evening being scored inside the opening 22 minutes of the match! Second half goals in 48 and 87 minutes took the shine off, but there were encouraging signs in terms of spirit.
