1998-99 (Reserves) |
The 124th season of Partick Thistle F.C. |
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets | |
1. Tue-21-Jul-1998 [a] L0-1 Queen's Park (Friendly) |
– MP 4/8/1998. Ross, McKenzie, McCann, Jamieson, Trialist, Dunn, Donaghy, Bryce, Callaghan, Morgan, Johnston. (Gallen, Howie, Martin, Rodden.) |
– A miserable performance in miserable weather. The Queen's Park defence was a tough nut to crack and Thistle found themselves 1-down (16). Ross saved with his legs to prevent a second before half-time. Jamieson's header hit the bar but that was as close as Thistle got. |
2. Sat-08-Aug-1998 [h] D2-2 Albion Rovers (Friendly) |
– MP 22/8/1998. Ross, Trialist, Trialist, McCann, Edwards, Callaghan, McKenzie, BRYCE, MARTIN, Dunn, McVey. (Rodden, Howie, Houston.) |
– McKenzie set up Martin for the opener and Dunn did likewise for Manager Bryce as Thistle took a 2-goal lead (20). Despite being the better team, poor defending and inexperience at the back after half-time led to three penalties (scored, skied, scored). |
3. Wed-19-Aug-1998 [h] L0-2 Greenock Morton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 5/9/1998. Ross, Trialist, Trialist, McCann, Gaughan, McKenzie, Trialist, Donaghy, Martin, Dunn, McVey. (Trialist, Trialist, Howie.) |
– The match never rose above the mediocre. A shot from around 35 yards deceived Ross (17) then one from even further out caught in the wind and flew over Ross' head for 2-0 (55). Morton were reduced to 10 men (wild kick) but Dunn hitting the post was as all Thistle managed. |
4. ?Wed-26-Aug-1998 [a] D2-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 5/9/1998. Ross, Trialist, McKeown, Gaughan, McCann, Trialist, Howie, McKenzie, DUNN (2), Martin, McVey. (Trialist, Donaghy, Houston.) Nominal date. |
– Dunn scored off a post (8) but it was Hamilton who went ahead from a 12-yard finish and a close-in header (27). A Gaughan free-kick was headed on into the path of Dunn and he finished off for 2-2 (60). Ross had some good saves to keep the point earned. |
5. Thu-03-Sep-1998 [h] W3-2 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League Cup 1st Round) |
– MP 12/9/1998. Ross, McKENZIE, McVey, Trialist, Trialist, Trialist, DONAGHY, Edwards, Martin, Johnston, DUNN. (Trialist, Trialist, Houston.) (Played at Firhill.) |
– Dunn gave Thistle the lead flicking home at the near post (30) then Donaghy headed in a fine Johnston cross (34). Clyde reduced the lead a minute later however. The 2nd half was mostly Thistle and a McKenzie 40-yarder made it 3-1 (85) before Clyde scored again (90). |
6. Tue-08-Sep-1998 [a] W2-1 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 26/9/1998. Ross, McKenzie, Trialist, Johnston, Edwards, Trialist, Bonar, CALLAGHAN (T), Martin, DUNN, ?. (Trialist, Trialist, McKeown.) |
– It was no surprise when Clyde took the lead (14), weakened, makeshift Thistle all at sea, but gradually they got going and were unlucky to be still down at half-time. An unstoppable 25-yarder by Callaghan put things level (61) and Dunn headed home the winner (82). |
7. Tue-15-Sep-1998 [h] W2-1 Stranraer (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 26/9/1998. Ross, Bonar, McArthur, McKenzie, McCann, Callaghan (T), Trialist, Johnston, CALLAGHAN (W) (2 - I pen)), Houston, Donaghy. (Trialist.) |
– Thistle trailed at half-time due to a Ross error but a penalty for hand-ball was tucked away by Callaghan for 1-1 (46). He got on the end of a near-post cross 3 minutes later for the winner. A good save late on denied him a rare hat-trick. |
8. Tue-22-Sep-1998 [a] L2-4 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 11/10/1998. Aitchison, Bonar, McArthur, McKenzie, McCann, Frame, Callaghan (T), JOHNSTON, MARTIN, Houston, Donaghy. (Trialist.) |
– St Mirren took a 2-goal lead (the second with a hint of off-side) but by half-time it was level thanks to headers by Johnston and Martin from crosses by McArthur. There was no prospect of taking the lead however. Defensive frailties let in Saints twice by the end. |
9. Tue-06-Oct-1998 [h] L1-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 24/10/1998. Aitchison, Trialist, McArthur, Johnston, Edwards, Trialist, McKENZIE, Frame, Martin, Trialist, Trialist. (McVey). |
– The damage was done in the first half and Thistle trailed 2-0 at half-time. A stunning left foot shot by McKenzie was all Thistle could muster despite camping around the Queens penalty box for most of the second half. |
10. Thu-08-Oct-1998 [h] W6-3 Stranraer (Scottish Reserve League Cup Quarter Final) |
– MP 24/10/1998. Aitchison, Bonar, McARTHUR, Edwards, McCann, McKENZIE (2), CALLAGHAN (T) (2), Donaghy, Callaghan (W), HOUSTON, Johnston. (Day, Trialist, Trialist.) |
– Callaghan opened for Thistle (7). He scored again and a McKenzie volley followed by a Houston goal put Thistle well ahead after 16 minutes. Stranraer reduced the lead just on half-time. McKenzie (64) and McArthur (67) made it 6. Stranraer scored twice late on after Thistle had lost a man to injury. |
11. Tue-13-Oct-1998 [a] L1-3 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 24/10/1998. Arthur, Bonar, McArthur, Trialist, Martin, Donaghy, JOHNSTON, Callaghan (T), Callaghan (W), Trialist, Frame. (Edwards, Trialist.) |
– Johnston chipped the keeper from 20 yards to give Thistle the lead but the break of the ball fell kindly and Arthur was rounded for 1-1 just on half-time. Thistle were second best in the second half and two long-range strikes (the second in the last minute) saw Airdrie home. |
12. Mon-02-Nov-1998 [a] L1-2 Greenock Morton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 28/11/1998. Arthur, Houston, McArthur, Edwards Trialist, Frame, Trialist, Johnston, MORGAN, Dunn, Fisher. (Trialist, Trialist.) |
– In driving rain, the teams produced an entertaining match. A 20-yard drive put Morton ahead (37) but a beautifully flighted free-kick by Morgan just on half-time put things level. Thistle played well after the break but it was Morton who got the winner with the last kick. Harsh. |
13. Mon-09-Nov-1998 [h] D1-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 28/11/1998. Arthur, Bonar, Trialist, Jamieson, McCann, Frame, Trialist, Johnston, DUNN, Trialist, Edwards. (Trialist.) |
– With a number of call-offs and the loss of trialist No 10 in a collision with the keeper, the match was low in quality but well-contested. It looked like a 0-0 draw all the way until a header beat Arthur off a post (84) but Dunn equalised (88) with "a cracker". |
14. Wed-18-Nov-1998 [a] W5-0 Albion Rovers (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 28/11/1998. Arthur, Trialist, Trialist, Kennedy, Trialist, Johnston, Trialist* (2), Frame, Trialist, DUNN (3), McVey. (Martin, Trialist, Trialist.) *Trialist No 7 was Lee Dair. |
– There was only going to be one winner in this match. A hat-trick by Dunn and two from trialist No 7 made for an easy win for Thistle. |
15. Tue-24-Nov-1998 [h] W1-0 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 19/12/1998. Arthur, McKenzie Trialist, Trialist, Gaughan, Kennedy, Johnston, Bryce, Trialist, Dunn, Frame. (Howie, HOUSTON.) |
– Despite the strong team selection and dominating for most of the match, it took a Houston strike (75) to earn the points. |
16. ?Tue-01-Dec-1998 [a] L1-4 Stranraer (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 19/12/1998. Arthur, Bonar, Trialist, Johnston, Edwards, Frame, Trialist, Bryce, Martin, Flannigan, Trialist. (Rodden, Houston, Trialist.) (1 og.) Nominal date. |
– The rain relented but the pitch was barely playable. Only a fine display by Arthur kept the score from being worse than it was. Thistle didn't even manage to score - the goal was an og. |
17. Thu-10-Dec-1998 [h] W3-0 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League) |
– PDE 11/12/1998 & MP 19/12/1998. Ross, Bonar, Trialist, Callaghan (T), Edwards, Walker, JOHNSTON (3), Bryce, Houston, Flannigan, Frame. (Trialist, Fisher, Rodden.) |
– A curling shot by Johnston aided by the wind deceived the keeper (8) to put a very experienced Thistle side 1-up. His next effort was a deflected header from a corner (31), Saints hit the post before half-time. Pressure on the Thistle defence came to nothing and Johnston scored again (87). |
18. Wed-27-Jan-1999 [a] W3-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 17/2/1999. Aitchison, Connell, McKechnie, Hood, McCANN, Howie, Frame. McKenzie, LAUCHLAN (pen), JOHNSTON, McArthur. (Day, Rodden, Fisher.) |
– McCann forced the ball over the line for 1-0 (41) after sustained Thistle pressure. Lauchlan slammed home a penalty after Howie was brought down (58) but Queens scored 2 minutes later. Johnston's bullet header from a McArthur corner put the points safe. |
19. Tue-02-Feb-1999 [h] D1-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 17/2/1999. Aitchison, Edwards, McVey, Trialist, McCann, McKenzie, Jacobs, FRAME, Trialist, Johnston, Trialist. (Fisher, Howie, Rodden.) |
– Ex-JAG McCormick gave Airdrie (with 5 ex-JAGs in their side) a deserved lead (20). The second half saw Thistle improve with trialist Jacobs impressive and a McKenzie pass set up Frame to equalise. Either team might have scored late on but a draw was fair. |
20. Mon-29-Mar-1999 [h] L1-2 Junior Scotland XI (Friendly) |
– MP 10/4/1999. Trialist, Trialist, Trialist, Gaughan, McCann, Frame, Bonar, Callaghan, Trialist, Trialist, Johnston. (Trialist, McVey, Jamieson.) Home fixture played at Linlithgow Rose FC. Trialist scorer not identified but may have been No 2. |
21. Mon-12-Apr-1999 [h] L1-2 Livingston (Scottish Reserve League Cup Semi Final) |
– MP 1/5/1999 & TS 12/4/1999. Aitchison, Hood, McKechnie, McCann, Gaughan, McKenzie, Bonar, Johnston, Houston, FRAME, McArthur. |
– Controversy! Livingston fielded a line-up challenging for promotion from Div 2. Despite that the young Thistle team more than held their own until half-time. Frame scored from 40 yards but two late goals meant a cup exit. The second came after a foul on Aitchison went unpunished. |
22. ?Thu-15-Apr-1999 [h] W5-2 Alloa Athletic (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 1/5/1999. Trialist, Trialist, Trialist, McKENZIE, FISHER. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included 7 trialists. Nominal date. |
23. Tue-20-Apr-1999 [h] L3-4 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 1/5/1999. McCANN, McKENZIE, REID. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Ayr took a 2-goal lead but goals by McKenzie and McCann pulled Thistle level. Frame then Callaghan were sent off and the 9 men conceded twice before Reid scored at the last gasp. |
24. Tue-04-May-1999 [h] D0-0 Albion Rovers (Scottish Reserve League) |
