1987-88 (Reserves)
The 113th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. Mon-10-Aug-1987 [a] D0-0 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 15/9/1987. Line-up comprised MacLean and 10 x N/Ks.
A fortunate point against a much more experienced Motherwell side. An immaculate performance by MacLean - a string of excellent saves and a penalty saved - was the highlight. Thistle almost stole a win with a long-range effort well saved.
2. Tue-18-Aug-1987 [a] L0-5 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 15/9/1987. Line-up comprised MacLean, Cairns and 9 x "newmen".
3. Tue-25-Aug-1987 [h] L0-2 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 25/8/1987. Line-up as yet unsourced.
4. Tue-01-Sep-1987 [a] W2-1 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 5/9/1987. GALLAGHER, McADAM (pen). Line-up as yet unsourced.
5. Tue-08-Sep-1987 [h] W2-0 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
DR 9/9/1987. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
6. Mon-21-Sep-1987 [a] L0-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 3/10/1987. Line-up comprised Cairns, Elliott, Rafferty, Spittal, Law, McAdam, Dodds and 4 x N/Ks.
Goals just before half-time and 15 minutes from time earned Queens the points. The nearest Thistle came was a run by McAdam from his own half, a neat one-two and a header just inches wide.
7. Mon-28-Sep-1987 [a] D1-1 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 10/10/1987. Line-up comprised Cairns, McAdam, Law, TRIALIST, Dodds and 6 x "newmen". (McLaren.)
After a goalless first half trialist No 8 touched in after the keeper and McAdam had collided at a free-kick (48). McAdam was stretchered off as a result. Disorganised, Thistle held on until slack defending let in Queens for an equalise with 15 seconds to go.
8. Thu-08-Oct-1987 [a] L1-2 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 17/10/1987. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
9. Mon-12-Oct-1987 [h] L0-3 Albion Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 17/10/1987. Line-up comprised Spittal, Dodds and 9 x "newmen".
10. Mon-19-Oct-1987 [a] D1-1 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 27/10/1987. Line-up comprised Cairns, Elliott, McAdam, Law, Doyle, TRIALIST and 5 x "newmen".
Thistle went ahead when trialist No 9 sprung Ayr's off-side trap, rounded the keeper and cooly slotted home (55). The goal was deserved on play but slack defending let in Ayr to level through ex-JAG McKenzie (80). Thereafter it was a case of hanging on for a point.
11. Mon-09-Nov-1987 [a] L1-3 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 14/11/1987. Line-up comprised Cairns, Rafferty, Doyle, TRIALIST and a mixture of youths and trialists.
Losing 2 sloppy goals inside the first 6 minutes set the scene for this match. Thistle did reduce the lead when trialist No 9 scored with a fine 20-yard free-kick off the bar but generally Clydebank were too strong and Thistle seldom threatened after the third goal (55).
12. Thu-12-Nov-1987 [a] W2-1 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 5/12/1987. Line-up comprised LAW, TRIALIST and 9 x "newmen".
A shaky start saw Thistle go behind (20) but after that there was a noticeable improvement. Trialist No 11 scored with a low drive (60). Law scored with a magnificent shot, later measured at 58 yards, (82). Great pity there were so few people there and no TV coverage.
13. Thu-26-Nov-1987 [a] L1-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 5/12/1987. Line-up comprised DOYLE and 10 x N/Ks.
A disappointing performance. Doyle latched on to a loose ball, advanced a few paces and smashed the opener high into the net (60). Thistle faded badly after that and Hamilton's strong finish secured the points with two late goals.
14. Mon-30-Nov-1987 [h] W3-2 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 19/12/1987. Line-up comprised Trialist (keeper), Cairns, Pirie, DOYLE, TRIALIST, TRIALIST and 5 x N/Ks.
Having led 3-0 at one point, Thistle ended up hanging on. A 20-yard drive by Doyle (6) then goals by two trialists (15 and 38) made for a big lead but by half-time it was 3-1. Soon after the restart it was 3-2. Killie were awarded a pen (hand ball, 75), but trialist keeper saved it.
15. Thu-03-Dec-1987 [h] L2-3 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 19/12/1987. Line-up comprised Trialist keeper), Cairns, McAdam, Doyle, TRIALIST (2) and 7 x "newmen".
Thistle fought back from 3-down just after half-time to almost earn a point. Gradually they got organised and trialist No 7 scored twice, both headers. Dumbarton were rattled. They could have increased their lead but trialist keeper saved a penalty as he did the previous week.
16. Mon-07-Dec-1987 [h] W3-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 19/12/1987. Line-up comprised Cairns, McAdam, TRIALIST, TRIALIST (2) and 7 x "newmen".
Trialist No 11 scored twice around the half-hour mark. The loss of McAdam to injury robbed the team of a steadying influence and Queens took over. Trialist No 9 netted against the run of play but the visitors scored a couple of late goals and almost took a point in the dying seconds.
17. Thu-17-Dec-1987 [a] D2-2 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 26/12/1987. Line-up comprised Trialist (keeper), Cairns, McAdam, Law, TRIALIST, DOYLE and 5 x youths/"newmen". Trialist scorer may have been Dinnie ([*GH).
Entertaining and a fair result. A swerving shot from 35 yards put Killie 1-up. Trialist No 7 equalised after the keeper's blunder (49) but confusion in the rear ranks let Killie in to score (75). Cairns hit the bar then trialist No 11 set up Doyle to score from a tight angle (90).
18. Wed-23-Dec-1987 [h] W2-1 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League Cup 2nd Round)
MP 16/1/1988. MacLean, Cairns, Rafferty, McAdam, Scrimgeour, Law, McNAUGHT, Pirie, DODDS, Trialist, Trialist.
With a more experienced line-up of late, Thistle took the lead (20) when Dodds latched on to a short pass-back. Clydebank had the best of things but McNaught scored against the run of play (68). Bankies scored with MacLean seemingly unsighted (73).
19. Mon-04-Jan-1988 [h] L0-1 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 16/1/1988. Line-up comprised Trialist (keeper), Workman, Rafferty, McAdam, Law and 6 x "newmen". (Trialist, Trialist.)
Starting with 7 and ending with 9 trialists, Thistle were outthought and outplayed. Clyde should have won more comfortably. A looping header caught trialist keeper off his line for the only goal (20). Trialist No 9 almost stole a point with a header (89) cleared off the line.
20. Mon-11-Jan-1988 [h] W2-1 Clyde (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
GH 12/1/1988. LOGAN, KELLY. Line-up as yet unsourced.
21. Wed-27-Jan-1988 [a] L0-1 Stenhousemuir (Scottish Reserve League Cup 3rd Round)
MP 6/2/1988. Line-up as yet unsourced.
A real shock exit from the competition. Thistle dominated for long spells but their finishing was terrible. Seventeen minutes from time they were awarded a penalty but it was blasted high and wide. Extra time saw the inevitable winner from a drooping header.
22. Tue-02-Feb-1988 [a] D1-1 Albion Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/2/1988. Line-up comprised Graham (keeper), CAMPBELL and 9 x "newmen".
Campbell showed some nice footwork to evade 2 defenders and slip the ball past the keeper for 1-0 (44). Rovers were resolute however and the game got bogged down in a midfield struggle until the defence got into a fankle and Rovers scored (90).
23. Thu-18-Feb-1988 [h] L0-1 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 27/2/1988. Graham (keeper), Elliott, McAdam, Spittal, Thomson, Logan and 5 x "newmen".
Logan was well clear but was chopped down (a "professional foul") and couldn't resume after half-time. It was an even contest and Thistle matched a stronger Celtic side until tired legs in the last 15 minutes took their toll and a late goal won the points.
24. Thu-03-Mar-1988 [h] W2-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round)
MP 12/3/1988. PIRIE, LOGAN. Remaining (experienced) line-up as yet unsourced.
Logan ran through looking suspiciously off-side and opened for Thistle (20) then Pirrie added a second (26). It was all going so well but in the 2nd half Thistle lost their way and Airdrie got on top. It was more luck than judgement they were restricted to one goal.
25. Mon-07-Mar-1988 [a] D0-0 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 26/3/1988.Line-up comprised Brough, McAdam and 9 x "newmen". (Graham.)
An entertaining but goalless encounter. Defences were on top and chances were few. McAdam went closest with a fine header. The keeper was beaten but a defender cleared off the line. Brough took ill and was replaced by Graham at half-time.
26. Mon-14-Mar-1988 [h] L0-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 26/3/1988. Line-up comprised McAdam, Watson and 9 x N/Ks. (Pirie.)
Hamilton were decidedly better and were well organised at the back by Celtic legend McGrain (then almost 38). The loss of McAdam to injury at half-time didn't help. A goal in either half was a fair reflection on the play. Watson's return after 3 months out injured was the only bonus.
27. Mon-21-Mar-1988 [a] L0-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 26/3/1988. Brough, Spittal, Elliott, Thomson, Maher, Watson, Pirie, McGinley, Trialist, Gallagher, Graham.
Not for the first time failure to take their chances cost Thistle dear. They were solid at the back and good up to the last third but no-one had a finish. A tap in after one of the few occasions the defence was split open did the damage (10).
28. Wed-23-Mar-1988 [a] W1-0 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 9/4/1988. Graham (P), Trialist, Elliott, Trialist, Spittal, McAdam, Pirie, Dodds, Thomson, Gallagher (S), Graham (G). (Trialist, CAMPBELL.)
Thistle played well on an excellent surface but lacked the finishing touch their play deserved but that changed after 61 mins. McAdam broke up an attack, strode up field riding several tackles the laid the ball off perfectly for Campbell to score the only goal.
29. Mon-28-Mar-1988 [a] W3-2 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 9/4/1988. Graham, Pirie, Workman, McGinley, Spittal, McAdam, Thomson, McDonald, DODDS (2), Mitchell, LOGAN.
A double by Dodds put Thistle 2-up after 20 minutes but Clyde reduced the lead - the defence looking for off-side. Logan was put through to slot past the keeper (65) but Clyde scored when Graham clawed a ball off the line that was deemed to have gone in.
30. Thu-31-Mar-1988 [a] D0-0 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 9/4/1988. Line-up comprised Brough, Workman, Spittal, McAdam, Pirie, Mitchell and 5 x N/Ks. (McDonald.)
A draw was a fair result in a match that started well enough but became bogged down in midfield and lacking in chances. McAdam went nearest from corner but that was as close as Thistle got to scoring.
31. Mon-11-Apr-1988 [h] L0-3 Dundee United (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final)
MP 23/4/1987. Brough, Spittal, Dinnie, McAdam, Maher, Workman, Dodds, Pirie, Logan, Law, Thomson. (Kelly, Mitchell).
Thistle made a tame exit from the competition although they enjoyed little luck. A deflected shot spun beyond Brough for 1-0 and two second-half goals both close in (the defence AWOL) made it 3. Logan fired a penalty against the keeper's legs and it was cleared.
32. Wed-13-Apr-1988 [a] W2-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 23/4/1988. Line-up comprised 11 x "newmen" (one of whom scored twice).
With the first XI playing the same night, an experimental side did well to recover from being 1-down at the interval (a penalty). A trialist scored twice to turn the match around.
33. Wed-20-Apr-1988 [a] W2-0 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 7/5/1988. Graham, Trialist, TRIALIST, Purdie, Maher, McGhie, Trialist, Trialist, DODDS, Logan, Thomson.
A decent performance and a couple of good goals settled this match. Dodds steadied on the 6 yards line, let the keeper commit himself and stuck the ball away (26) then trialist No 3 let loose from 20 yards, everyone expecting a cross (37).
34. Mon-25-Apr-1988 [a] L3-5 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 7/5/1988. Trialist, Spittal, Trialist, McAdam, Maher, Pirie, Trialist, Thomson, DODDS (2), Logan, GALLAGHER (S).
Having fought back to level 3 times only to cave in was a big disappointment. Dodds levelled from close in (15). Spittal missed a penalty then Gallagher made it 2-2 (43). Dodds made it 3-3 just after Ayr had scored (penalty) but they ran the late show and scored twice.
35. Thu-28-Apr-1988 [h] W2-0 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 7/5/1988. Graham, Pirie, Elliott, Trialist, Maher, Trialist, Trialist, McGinley, TRIALIST, Trialist, GALLAGHER (S).
Trialist No 9 opened the scoring just before half-time with a looping header. A cracking left-foot drive by Gallagher midway through the second half secured the points.
36. Tue-03-May-1988 [a] W2-0 Albion Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 4/5/1988. GALLAGHER (2). Line-up as yet unsourced.
37. Wed-04-May-1988 [h] L0-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 5/5/1988. Line-up as yet unsourced.
38. ?day-dd-mmm-yyyy [?] W2-1 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
No trace of this result. It has been assumed from the final table printed in MP 13/8/1988.
1987-88 Reserves summary notes

P38 W15 D7 L16 (1.368 ppg)

Historical PT Reserves average: 1.462 ppg (@ 22-Aug-2023)
  • The points-per-game measurements (ppg) above are calculated on the same principle as the first-team's all games category, and are based on 1 point for a draw and 3 points for a win across all eras.
  • Final League Position: 7th of 13, 31/66 pts. Motherwell withdrew from the league competition after 22 matches and Celtic after 11 matches. Against the original total of 36 fixtures Thistle therefore played 33. That said, there is no trace of one of those fixtures (QOS home or away) and that match result has been assumed from the final table printed in MP 13/8/1988.
  • MP reports for 1987/88 are brief and contain few complete line-ups. The distinction between PTFC youth players, “newmen”/trialists and unidentified senior players is often blurred.
