scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. Sat-08-Aug-1981 [a] L2-3 Dundee United (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 19/8/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Kay, Smith, Doyle (G), Johnston, Docherty, Sweeney, Clark, McDOWALL. (Campbell (E), McLeod.) (1 og.)
Two-up at half-time and seemingly in control with goals from McDowall (15) and an og by Walter Smith (40), the 2nd half was a disaster. Goals 50, 70 levelled things, Clark was sent off (retaliation) and former-JAG Gibson scored (84).
2. Sat-15-Aug-1981 [h] W3-2 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 19/8/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Kay, Smith, Doyle (G), JOHNSTON, Docherty, Sweeney, McDonald, CAMPBELL (E). (1 og.)
Thistle dominated the first half and Johnston side-stepped the keeper (35). A sweeping move was finished off by Campbell (53) An og 2 mins later made it 3. Injury substitutions and 2 goals in the last 15 mins made for a nervous finish.
3. Sat-22-Aug-1981 [h] W2-1 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 26/8/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Kay, Smith, Doyle, PARK, Docherty (G), Gibson, SWEENEY, Campbell (E).
McNab misjudged a cross and Aberdeen scored (3) and they should have increased their lead. Gibson's header came off the post and Sweeney finished off (40). The Dons dominated the 2nd half but Campbell set up Park for the winner against the run of play.
4. Sat-29-Aug-1981 [a] L0-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 12/9/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Anderson, Smith, Doyle (G), Gibson, Docherty, Sweeney, McDowall, Campbell (E).
Rangers took the lead (18) and dominated the 1st half. They hit woodwork twice. Thistle came close just before and just after half-time and went on to control the game but Rangers caught them on the break (89).
5. Sat-05-Sep-1981 [a] W1-0 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 12/9/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, DOCHERTY, Smith, Anderson, Johnston, McDowall, Clark, Doyle (G), Campbell (E).
Thistle had a few close things in the 1st half with the wind but, strangely, played better against it after half-time. Docherty drew the keeper and slotted home the ony goal. McDowall was red-carded (90).
6. Sat-12-Sep-1981 [a] D3-3 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 3/10/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, SMITH, Campbell (J), Doyle (G), Docherty, Newman, Newman, JOHNSTON (2), Campbell (E). (Newman)
Thistle had a good opening spell but Aberdeen took a 2-goal lead. Smith headed home a corner (35) then Johnston scored from 30 yards. Dons went ahead again after half-time but Johnson scored his second, this time from 25 yards.
7. Mon-21-Sep-1981 [h] L0-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 3/10/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Smith, Campbell (J), Doyle (G), Johnston, Jardine, McDowall, Watson, Clark. (Campbell (E), Docherty.)
A disappointing performance in the light of recent results. Rangers took the lead on the half-hour and although Thistle had a few close things throughout, future-JAG Dalziel finished off a solo run (80) to put the issue beyond doubt.
8. Tue-22-Sep-1981 [h] L0-1 Heart of Midlothian (Friendly)
LH. Line-up as yet unsourced. Featuring future-JAGS John Brough & Gerry McCoy.
9. Sat-26-Sep-1981 [h] D2-2 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 17/10/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Scott, SMITH, Kay, Gibson, DOCHERTY, Sweeney, Higgins, Campbell (E). (Johnston, McDowall.)
Defensive frailties let in Saints (7) but Smith headed home a corner (12). Docherty started and finished a good move running 70 yards (25). Gifted possession gifted the equaliser (50) and McNab saved a pen (80). Keenly contested, fair result.
10. Sat-03-Oct-1981 [a] L0-4 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 17/10/1981. McNab, Murray, Scott, Kay, Smith, O'Hara, Docherty, Higgins, McDowall, Sweeney, Doyle (G). (Campbell (E), McTear.)
An early pen gave Celtic the lead and it was almost 2-0 a minute later. Thistle settled and Sweeney went close several times but Celtic dominated after that to lead 3-0 at half-time and a 4th goal rounded off a comprehensive win.
11. Sat-10-Oct-1981 [h] L0-1 Dundee United (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 17/10/1981. McNab, Murray, Scott, Campbell (J), Smith, Campbell (E), Docherty, Higgins, McDowall, Doyle (G), Sweeney. (McCabe.) Final Position: no table found. 8/20 pts.
Thistle were the better team early on and looked the more likely to score until the 65th min when a defensive error let in United. It was even on possession and chances after that but Thistle couldn't find a goal. United won the section.
12. Sat-17-Oct-1981 [a] D0-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 7/11/1981. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Campbell (J), Smith, Doyle (G), McDowall, Jardine, O'Hara, Sweeney, Campbell (E). (Docherty.)
Thistle should have won this game handsomely. Chance after chance came and went (18 shots at goal in ten 1st half) and Kilmarnock were rarely seen in attack. The 2nd half was unchanged but after 90 minutes it was still 0-0.The scoring touch was posted missing.
13. Tue-03-Nov-1981 [h] W2-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 21/11/1981. McNab, Doyle (G), Lapsley, Docherty, Campbell (J), Smith, McDowall, HIGGINS, Sweeney, O'Hara, CAMPBELL (E).
Shot-shy forwards wasted some good play in the 1st half. Higgins, who was shouted at by one particular fan, got the last laugh when he thumped in a cut-back. Campbell swerved past a defender and clipped the ball in for 2-0 (75) then McNab had a great save (87).
14. Sat-07-Nov-1981 [a] D3-3 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 21/11/1971. McNab, McCabe, Coyne, Campbell (J), Smith, Campbell (E), Docherty, Newman, McDOWALL, Newman, SWEENEY (2). (Newman.)
Thistle got off to a great start when Sweeney headed home (1). Ex-JAG Marr (J) converted a pen (38). McDowall scored (41). Morton scored with their 2nd pen (50) and went ahead (67) but Sweeney levelled (75) and he hit the post in the last minute.
15. Sat-14-Nov-1981 [h] W2-0 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 21/11/1971. McNab, McTear, McCabe, Doyle (G), Smith, Jardine, Newman, DOCHERTY, Sweeney, Newman. McDowall. (Newman, Newman.)
Docherty headed home a Sweeney cross (5) then "newman" @ No 7 finished off a fine flowing move (23). Tiredness set in after half-time but Thistle saw the game out comfortably for both points.
16. Sat-21-Nov-1981 [a] D1-1 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 28/11/1981. McNab, McTear, McCabe, Docherty, Campbell (J), Kay, Jardine, Doyle (G), Sweeney, Newman, McDOWALL.
Both keepers had fine saves early on then Doyle's free-kick was finished off McDowall (20) but after some poor defending it was 1-1 (34). The 2nd half saw spells of Bankies pressure but Thistle had good chances too. 1-1 was a fair reflection on play.
17. Sat-28-Nov-1981 [a] D1-1 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 12/12/1981. McNab, McKinnon, McCabe, Campbell (J), Scott, Kay, Jardine, Doyle (J), Higgins, Newman, O'Hara. (DOCHERTY (G).)
Several chances fell to "newman" as Thistle enjoyed the best of the play but they couldn't find the net. Higgins hit the post, Saints went close then a free-kick put them ahead but Docherty grabbed the equaliser. On play, a fair result.
18. Tue-01-Dec-1981 [h] W1-1 Ayr United (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round)
MP 12/12/1981. AET. Won 5-4 on pens. McNab, McKinnon, Lapsley, Campbell (J), Kay, Doyle (G), Higgins, Jardine, Sweeney, McDowall, O'HARA. First round bye.
Higgins hit the post early on but soon Ayr went ahead following a free-kick. Thistle struggled to make an impression but finally O'Hara headed in a Jardine cross (38). Most of the 2nd half belonged to them whereas ET was end to end stuff.
19. Sat-05-Dec-1981 [h] L0-4 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 12/12/1981. McNab, McKinnon, McCabe, Campbell (J), Scott, Kay, Docherty, McDowall, Sweeney, Doyle (G), Newman. (Newman, McTear.).
There were good saves at both ends at first but soon Celtic took over and they led 2-0 at half-time. Two more goals emphasised the gulf in class and there was no way back. McDowall missed a pen and an injury to Docherty reduced Thistle to 10 men (75).
20. ?Mon-19-Jan-1982 [h] W3-0 Dunfermline Athletic (Friendly)
HA. Nominal date. CLARK (2), WATSON. Line-up as yet unsourced.
21. Sat-23-Jan-1982 [a] L0-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/2/1982. McNab, MacKinnon, McCabe, Kay, Smith, Lapsley, Doyle (G), Higgins, Sweeney, McDowall, Campbell (E). (Murray, Scott.)
Down 1-0 in 5 minutes through a fine header, Thistle were lucky it was no worse. Queens had already hit the post and they had a goal disallowed that would have doubled their lead. An improvement after half-time still drew a blank. A poor performance.
22. Mon-25-Jan-1982 [h] W5-0 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/2/1982. McNab, Murray, Whittaker, Scott, Smith, McDonald, Docherty, Doyle, (G), SWEENEY, McDOWALL (2) Campbell (E). (CLARK (2), Lapsley.)
A convincing performance. Sweeney finished off a fine passing move (4) then McDowall made it 2-0 (7). Sub Clark scored twice after half-time and McDowall made it 5-0 in the last minute.
23. Sat-30-Jan-1982 [h] W1-0 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/2/1982. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Docherty, Smith, Kay, HIGGINS, Doyle (G), McDowall, Lapsley, O'Hara. (Scott.)
Higgins was set up by Lapsley and McDowall to fire home the opener (75 secs) but that was that. The rest of the game was even but Thistle survived a late penalty claim that was ignored by the ref.
24. Sat-06-Feb-1982 [a] D1-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/3/1982. McNab, Scott, Lapsley, CAMPBELL (J), Smith, Kay, Doyle (G), Murray, O'Hara, Newman, Campbell (E). (Newman.)
A fine save by McNab thwarted future-JAG Flood (15) but with the Thistle defence posted missing he opened the scoring (27). Lots of Airdrie pressure was applied but Thistle hung on and Campbell snatched a late equaliser.
25. Tue-09-Feb-1982 [h] W2-0 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/3/1982. McNab, Scott, McCabe, Campbell (J), Kay, Clark, Murray, O'Hara, Newman, SWEENEY (2), Campbell (E). (McDowall.)
An even 1st half lacked goals but after half-time Sweeney netted a Campbell (E) cross (55). His double came from a header (60). Campbell (E) hit the post later on but the points were secured.
26. Sat-20-Feb-1982 [h] L0-4 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/3/1982. McNab, Scott, McCabe, Kay, Smith, Campbell (E), Docherty, Lapsley, McDowall, Sweeney, O'Hara.
The score says it all. Former-JAG Somner started the ball rolling with a header (15). A goal-line clearance by McCabe offered some respite but two goals from future-JAG Logan made it 3-0. The 4th didn't flatter St Mirren.
27. Tue-23-Feb-1982 [h] W1-0 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/3/1982. McNab, Murray, Lapsley, Kay, Smith, O'Hara, Docherty, McDonald, SWEENEY, McDowall, Clark. (Campbell (E), Scott.)
A fine save by McNab prevented Ayr from going ahead (3) but Thistle settled and made numerous chances. Sweeney shaved a post, McDowall hit the bar and had a shot cleared on the line. Finally Sweeney headed home the winner (52).
28. Sat-27-Feb-1982 [a] W3-1 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/3/1982. McNab, Murray, Lapsley, Kay, Smith, CAMPBELL (E) (2), Docherty, Scott, Sweeney, McDowall, CLARK.
A magnificent 30-yarder by Clark (10) then a Campbell (E) header made it 2-0. Queens had a good spell then Sweeney was sent off just on half-time. The 10 men conceded one goal in a defensive mix-up (70) but Campbell got his 2nd (78).
29. Tue-09-Mar-1982 [h] L0-0 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final)
MP 27/3/1982. AET. Lost 1-4 on pens. McNab, Murray, Lapsley, Campbell (J), Smith, O'Hara, Docherty, McDonald, Sweeney, McDowall, Clark. (Scott.)
Future-JAG Brough was inspired with a string of great saves but McNab was busy too as the teams went at each other from the start. Extra time was no different with Thistle on top but they couldn't beat Brough. He even saved 2 pens in the shoot-out.
30. Sat-13-Mar-1982 [h] W3-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 27/3/1982. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Scott, Smith, Campbell (E), DOCHERTY, Newman, McDowall, Newman, Newman (2).
A much-depleted squad performed well under the circumstances. "Newman" @ No 11 drew the keeper to open the scoring but Queens levelled before half-time. Poor defending let them in again but Docherty equalised (67) and No 11 grabbed his second.
31. Sat-20-Mar-1982 [h] W2-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 27/3/1982. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Smith, Scott, Campbell (E), Docherty (G), Newman, McDowall, CLARK, Newman. (Newman, Newman.)
An even 1st half saw McNab making some fine saves and McDowall going close twice. Clark scored just on half-time following a free-kick. Killie had chances before "newman" @ No 11 scored and McDowall almost made it 3 just before the end.
32. Tue-30-Mar-1982 [a] W2-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 10/4/1982. Smyth, Murray, Whittaker, Kay, Smith, Doyle, Park, Jardine, O'HARA, McDonald, CLARK. (Sweeney, Lapsley.) Originally abandoned on 2 March (1-1 at half-time).
A strong Thistle side took a 2-goal lead through Clark and then O'Hara. Hamilton pulled one back late in the 2nd half but they couldn't find an equaliser.
33. Sat-03-Apr-1982 [h] D1-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 10/4/1982. Smyth, Scott, Whittaker, Anderson, Dunlop, Lapsley, Docherty, Kay, Newman, SWEENEY, Higgins. (McCabe, Smith.)
Sloppy defending let in Hamilton for the opener (7) the back 4 caught square. History almost repeated itself but this time Smyth smothered the shot. Thistle gradually came to life and Sweeney's header (65) earned a point.
34. Sat-10-Apr-1982 [a] L0-1 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 24/4/1982. Newman, Murray, Whittaker, Welsh, Smith, Kay, Docherty, Scott, McDowall, Clark, Campbell (E). (Sweeney, McCabe.)
A 30-yarder midway through the first half separated the teams. The match became increasing ill-tempered and towsy. The team didn't play badly but it was a not one to live long in the memory.
35. Sat-17-Apr-1982 [a] W4-1 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 24/4/1982. McNab, Murray, Whitaker, Kay, Smith, Scott, Docherty, McDonald, McDOWALL, SWEENEY (3) Campbell. (McCabe, Flaherty.)
McDowall put Thistle ahead (16) but Motherwell equalised (24). A string of tremendous saves prevented Thistle from taking a big lead but their keeper had to admit defeat thanks to a Sweeney hat-trick (55, 57 and 70). 2nd top.
36. Sat-24-Apr-1982 [a] D2-2 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 1/5/1982. McNab, Murray, McCabe, Kay, Smith, HIGGINS, Docherty, Scott, Sweeney, McDOWALL, Campbell (E). (Doyle (G).)
Thistle dented league leaders Celtic's 100% home record with a creditable draw. McDowall finished off a good move (7) but Celtic equalised (36). McNab had some fine saves before Higgins put Thistle ahead only for future-JAG Buckley to score late on.
37. Mon-26-Apr-1982 [a] L1-3 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 15/5/1982. McNab, Scott, McCabe, Kay, Smith, Campbell, (E), Higgins, Doyle (G), McDOWALL, Clark, McDonald. (Sweeney, Docherty.)
McNab's mistake let in Ayr (10). Thistle were disappointingly poor all round and by 20 minutes to go it as 3-0 (the 3rd from the pen spot). McDowall scored from a cut-back (84) but it was too little, too late.
38. Tue-11-May-1982 [h] W3-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 15/5/1982. DOCHERTY(2), McDOWALL. Line-up as yet unsourced.
