4. Tue-09-Sep-1980 [a] L2-3 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 20/9/1980. McNab, Murray, MacKinnon, Smith, Lapsley, Newman, McDonald, Clark, SCOTT, McDowall, Newman, Campbell (E). Remaining scorer as yet unsourced.
5. Sat-13-Sep-1980 [a] D0-0 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 20/9/1980. McNab, Marr (Jim), Smith, Kay, McKenzie, McLeod, Murray, McDonald, Clark, McDowall, Johnston.
6. Mon-22-Sep-1980 [a] D2-2 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 4/10/1980. McNab, Marr (Jim), Smith, Kay, McKenzie, Murray, McLean, CLARK, Scott, McLEOD, McCabe (David). (Campbell, Jamieson.)
McLeod opened the scoring in 23 mins taking advantage of a defensive error. Motherwell levelled (38) and went ahead (70) but the lead was short-lived when Clark pounced on a short pass back for 2-2.
7. Sat-27-Sep-1980 [h] W3-0 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 4/10/1980. McNab, Smith, Marr (Jim), Kay, McKenzie, MURRAY, McDonald, CLARK, McCabe (David), McLEOD. (Johnston, Jamieson.)
A convincing win with good performances across the team - particularly Marr (recovered from a broken leg) marshalling the defence.
8. Sat-04-Oct-1980 [a] W1-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 8/10/1980. McNab, Smith, Marr (John), Kay, McKenzie Newman, McDonald, CLARK, Murray, McLeod, McCabe (David). (Johnston, Marr (Jim).)
Competent rather than outstanding was the verdict. The strong wind rather spoiled the game and it took a left-foot shot from Clark (68) to secure the points.
9. Sat-11-Oct-1980 [h] W1-0 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 25/10/1980. McNab, Smith, Marr (Jim), Kay, McKenzie, CLARK, Jamieson, Campbell (Eddie), McCabe (David), McDowall, Johnston. (McLean.)
A narrow win and the only goal came after 83 minutes when McLean set McDowall away down the right and his cutback was finished off by Clark.
10. Sat-25-Oct-1980 [a] D1-1 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 8/11/1980. McNab, Smith, McKenzie, Marr (Jim), Kay, McLEOD, Jamieson, Campbell (E), Johnston, Scott, McCabe (David). (McLean, McDowall.)
A strong Rangers XI (22 goals in their previous 3 games) conceded the first goal by McLeod when a ball out of the Rangers defence was intercepted. Rangers equalised (55). An impressive performance that was much admired by the Rangers management.
11. Sat-01-Nov-1980 [h] W3-2 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 8/11/1980. McNab, SMITH, Kay, MARR (JOHN), McKenzie, Marr (Jim), Jamieson, McDonald, Johnston, Newman, SCOTT.
Two down in 12 minutes, Thistle had to work hard for this win. Scott followed up when a Marr (Jim) shot was parried then Smith scored with a fierce drive (44). The second half was even but it was Marr (John) who got the winner (90).
12. Sat-08-Nov-1980 [a] L0-2 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 22/11/1980. McNab, Smith, Marr(John), Marr (Jim), McKenzie, Murray, Jamieson, Campbell (E), McLean, McLeod, Scott.
A case of what might have been as Thistle wasted chance after chance while on top in the first half. To make matters worse a defensive error led to the opener (60) and the second came with the defence waiting for an off-side whistle that never came.
13. Wed-12-Nov-1980 [a] D1-1 Queen's Park (Friendly)
MP 22/11/1980. McNab, Marr (Jim), Welsh, Marr (John), Lapsley, Murray, McDonald, Campbell (E), Clark, TORRANCE, Scott.
Thistle fell behind but got back on level terms through Torrance. McDonald missed a penalty in the last minute.
14. Sat-15-Nov-1980 [h] W3-1 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 22/11/1980. McNab, Smith, Marr (Jim), Kay, McKenzie, McLean, Jamieson, CAMPBELL (E) (2), McLEOD, Johnston, Scott. (McDowall, McCabe).
Campbell headed home a McLean cross (8) and he got his second from the penalty spot (43). Clyde saw a player sent off at this point. McLeod then made it 3 just on half-time. Clyde reduced the lead (67) with Thistle failing to use their greater numbers.
15. Sat-22-Nov-1980 [a] L1-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/12/1980. McNab, Smith, Kay, Marr (Jim), McKenzie, McLean, Jamieson, CAMPBELL (E), Johnston, McLeod, McDowell. (McCabe (David).)
A poor performance was punished. Thistle couldn't get going at all and fell behind (15). It was 2-0 on the hour mark. A spirited fightback saw Campbell head home but that was the only goal. One of Hamilton's best players was ex-JAG Kellachan.
16. Wed-26-Nov-1980 [a] L1-3 Kilmarnock (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
MP 6/12/1980. McNab, Murray, Kay, Marr (Jim), McKenzie, McLean, Jamieson, Campbell (E), McCabe, TORRANCE, McLeod. (Johnston.)
An unsavable drive into the roof of the net put Thistle behind (5) but Torrance finished off a parried save (13) for 1-1 only to go behind again (35). There was some good play after half-time but a third goal (85) finished the scoring.
17. Sat-29-Nov-1980 [h] W2-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 6/12/1980. McNab, McLean, Marr (Jim), Smith, McKenzie, SCOTT (2), Kay, Campbell (E), Jamieson, McDowall, McLeod. (Johnston, Jackson.)
A move that saw two Thistle players dummy the ball let Scott in for the opener (15). He scored again (60) following good work by Kay and McLean.
18. Sat-06-Dec-1980 [a] L2-3 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 20/12/1980. McNab, Murray, McKenzie, McLEAN, Smith, Marr (John), Scott, McLEOD, Torrance, Kay, Campbell. (McDowall.)
McLean fired home the first goal after half-time but Celtic levelled a minute later through a soft penalty. McLeod restored the lead from long-range (63) but 2 minutes later it was 2-2. The winner came 8 mins from time. A draw would have been fairer.
19. Sat-13-Dec-1980 [h] L1-2 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 20/12/1980. McNab, Murray, Smith, Kay, Marr (Jim), McLean, JAMIESON, Marr (John), Campbell, Johnston, McLeod. (MacKinnon, McDowall.)
Poor defending let St Mirren in to take the lead (6) but a cut-back was netted by Jamieson 2 minutes later. Murray cleared off the line but the winner came after another defensive lapse (85).
20. Mon-29-Dec-1980 [a] W2-0 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 10/1/1981. McNab, MacKinnon, Smith, Marr, (John), McKenzie, Murray, McLean, CAMPBELL (E), Jamieson, SCOTT, McDowall. (Marr (Jim).)
Thistle made little use of the howling gale and driving rain at their backs in the first half but a solo effort by Campbell put them ahead (52). They mastered both the conditions and Clyde to score again through Scott (70).
21. ?Mon-19-Jan-1981 [a] W3-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Source of result not recorded, possibly HA. Nominal date, educated guesswork. In the MP dated 14/3/81 the report of the Motherwell match (played 28-Feb-1981) states that it was the last league fixture of the season. Then, in the programme dated 28/3/1981 they produced a league table showing all 26 matches played, with the points total and F&A totals all agreeing with our result sheets and the SFHA table.
22. Sat-24-Jan-1981 [a] D1-1 Dunfermline Athletic (Friendly)
MP 31/1/1981. McNab, MacKinnon, Smith, Kay, McKenzie, Scott, McLean, Higgins, McLeod, Johnston, McDowall. (CAMPBELL (E), Marr (J), McCabe, Jackson, Jamieson.)
A blistering drive by Campbell (80) cancelled out the opener by the Pars when McNab was blinded by the strong low sun (60) in this friendly to try and keep the players fit during a winter freeze.
23. Mon-26-Jan-1981 [h] W3-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 21/2/1981. McNab, MacKinnon, McKenzie, Newman, Smith, Junior, McCabe, Trialist, TORRANCE, Higgins, McLEOD. (KAY, Jackson.)
Ayr took the lead (15) when McNab looked to have been fouled but Torrance finished off a cut-back a min later. McLeod fired home (65) and after McNab had a brilliant save, sub Kay headed home from a corner (75). A pen reduced the lead (80).
24. ?Tue-03-Feb-1981 [h] L1-3 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
25. Tue-10-Feb-1981 [h] W1-0 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 21/2/1981. McNab, Murray, Trialist, Smith, Newman, McLean, Junior, Kay, McLeod, Torrance, SWEENEY. (Jamieson.)
An experimental line-up won by the closest of margins in a keenly contested game thanks to a goal in the last minute by Sweeney when he finished off good leading up work by Jamieson.
26. Thu-12-Feb-1981 [a] W2-1 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 21/2/1981. Newman, Murray, McKenzie, Marr (Jim), Smith, Kay, McLeod, Jamieson, JOHNSTON, McDOWALL, Campbell. (Jackson.)
A turn and shot in the box by McDowall put Thistle ahead (15). They couldn't capitalise when on top and lost their way. Bankies levelled while Kay was off getting treatment (78) but Johnston snatched the winner with a shot off the post (85).
27. Sat-14-Feb-1981 [h] W1-0 Kilmarnock (Friendly)
MP 14/3/1981. McNab, McLean, McKenzie, McLeod, Jackson, Smith, Jamieson, Kay, McDOWALL, Campbell, Johnston.
A McDowall goal was enough to separate the teams in this friendly encounter with a Kilmarnock side with a fair number of experienced players in their line-up.
28. Fri-20-Feb-1981 [a] D0-0 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 14/3/1981. McNab, Murray, Lapsley, McLean, Smith, Marr (Jim), Jamieson, McLeod, Torrance, Sweeney, Higgins. (McKenzie.)
A good match despite the scoreline on a bitterly cold night in Greenock. Both defences were on top and the forwards failed to take the chances that arose.
29. Mon-23-Feb-1981 [h] W5-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 14/3/1981. McNab, Murray, Kay, Smith, McKenzie, HIGGINS (2), McLeod, Campbell, Jamieson, TORRANCE (3), Sweeney. (Marr (Jim), McLean.)
A hat-trick by Torrance set Thistle on their way when he finished off a Higgins move (20), punished a poor ball out of defence (30 and made it 3 (50). Queens reduced the lead but a Higgins double (68 and 90) made for a big win.
30. Sat-28-Feb-1981 [h] L1-3 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 14/3/1981. McNab, Welsh, Smith, Kay, McKenzie, Murray, McLeod, McLean, Jamieson, TORRANCE, Campbell. (Marr (Jim).)
Torrance scored (38) to give Thistle a deserved lead on play but the defence stopped looking for off-side that wasn't given (55) and repeated the error (57)! Motherwell went on to score a third near the end.
31. Sat-14-Mar-1981 [a] W3-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 28/3/1981. McNab, Murray, Marr (Jim), WELSH, McKenzie, Jamieson, McLeod, Campbell (E), Johnston, SWEENEY (2), McDowall. (Kay, McLean.)
Welsh headed home a corner and Thistle held on to the lead despite sustained pressure from a strong Rangers XI. They fell behind after half-time but Sweeney scored twice to put Thistle back in front and secure a rare win at Ibrox. McNab and Marr were excellent.
32. Tue-24-Mar-1981 [h] W2-0 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 5/4/1981. McNab, Murray, Smith, Kay, McKenzie, Jamieson, Doyle (J), Marr, Campbell, Torrance, Sweeney. (JOHNSTON, McDOWALL.)
The referee finally declared the pitch playable and the first half proved goalless. Sub Johnston gave Thistle the lead (55) finishing off a fine 3-player move then sub Torrance took only 5 mins to make his mark with a second (70). Sweeney hit the post late on.
33. Tue-31-Mar-1981 [a] W2-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 25/4/1981. McNab, Murray, Smith, Kay, McKenzie, McLEOD, Doyle (J), CAMPBELL (E), Jamieson, Torrance, Johnston. (Marr (J), McDowall.)
McLeod scored following a Doyle free-kick (19) then a fine solo effort by Campbell doubled the score (30). Thistle subdued any Airdrie fightback after half-time and mastered the bitterly strong wind in their faces. An excellent win.
34. Mon-06-Apr-1981 [a] L1-4 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 25/4/1981. McNab, McKinnon, Smith, Kay, Murray, McLeod, Marr, Campbell (E), Jamieson, SWEENEY, O'Hara. (Torrance, McDowall.)
Needing one point to qualify from the section, Sweeney finished off good work by O'Hara (7). Everything looked fine until a defensive mix-up (50) and a deflected shot (65) put Motherwell ahead. Two more goals finished off a poor performance.
35. Mon-20-Apr-1981 [a] W1-0 Cowdenbeath (Scottish Reserve League Cup Play-Off)
