The 31st season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Mon-21-Aug-1905 [a] L0-3 Yoker Athletic (Friendly)
DR 22/8/1905. Howden, Fleming, Hutcheson, Gray (W), Melville, Walker, Lawrie, Swan, McKinlay, Gray (R), McGregor.
Yoker had Thistle on the back foot from the start and were 1-up after 10 minutes. Play evened out but the home defence was strong and it was 2-0 at half-time. It was all Thistle for most of the second half but it was Yoker who scored just on time.
2. Sat-09-Sep-1905 [h] W3-0 Third Lanark (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 1st Round)
SR 11/9/1905. Duncan, Doig, Lyon, Donald, Walker, Wilson, LAWRIE, Hutcheson, McCALL (2), Brown, McGregor.
Neither team dominated for any length of time but eventually Thistle began to improve before half-time. Walker hit the post with his penalty before a couple of goals by McCall. Thirds fought back to no avail and Lawrie got the third near the end.
3. Sat-16-Sep-1905 [h] W4-0 Scottish Rifles (Friendly)
SR 18/9/1905. Duncan, Doig, Logan, Hutcheson, Gilchrist, Wilson, Lawrie, McCall, Glen, Brown, McGregor. Scorers as yet unsourced.
The soldiers just edged the uneventful first half. They had chances but took too long to get their shots away (no pun intended). Four goals by Thistle after half-time flattered them and were rather sore on the visitors who had played well.
4. Sat-30-Sep-1905 [a] W4-0 Rangers (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Quarter Final)
SR 2/10/1905. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
5. Sat-07-Oct-1905 [h] L2-3 Broxburn Athletic (Friendly)
LG 13/10/1905. Duncan, Lyon, McKenzie, Rintoul, Wilson (H), Wilson (l), Lawrie, Fairbairn, SPROTT, BROWN, McGregor. 2 x 30 mins were played (weather).
Thistle took an early lead through Brown but by half-time the locals were 2-1 ahead. Thistle had a number of chances when playing down hill but their shooting was poor and they paid the price when they went 3-1 behind. Sprott scored in a spirited finish.
6. Sat-14-Oct-1905 [h] W3-0 Clyde (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Semi Final)
SR 16/10/1905. Duncan, Lyon, McKenzie, McKinlay, Gray, Wilson, Lawrie, McCall, McALLISTER, BROWN, McGREGOR.
McAllister beat several men to open for Thistle then Clyde headed over the bar from the goal line. Thistle had a goal disallowed for off-side. The second half saw McAllister miss on the goal line then Brown and McGregor made sure the final beckoned.
7. Sat-21-Oct-1905 [h] W3-1 Renton (Friendly)
SR 23/10/1905. Wallace, Lyon, McKenzie, Wilson (W), Samuel, Allan, Lawrie, McCall, Wilson (J), Brown, McGregor. Scorers as yet unsourced.
In fine weather a decent crowd saw the Renton keeper playing well and largely responsible for a goalless first half. Thistle scored soon after half-time and added two more before a late consolation for the visitors.
8. Sat-04-Nov-1905 [a] L2-3 Johnstone (Friendly)
PRG 11/11/1905. Duncan, Lyon, McKenzie, Wilson, GRAY (pen), Allan, Cameron, Lawrie. McCALL, Brown, McGregor.
Johnstone were the better team in the first half but their shooting was weak. Gray put Thistle ahead from the spot (47) but 10 minutes later it was all-square. McCall put Thistle 2-1 up but it was soon 2-2. The winner was a header late on.
9. Sat-11-Nov-1905 [h] W4-1 Scottish Amateurs XI (Friendly)
SR 13/11/1905. Duncan, Gray (W), McKenzie, Wilson (W), McGunn, Allan, Lawrie, Samuel, Smith, Brown, McGregor. Scorers as yet unsourced.
In miserable weather, Thistle took the lead but the amateurs soon equalised. It was 4-1 at half-time. Down to 9 men for a spell, they rallied once back to eleven and fought back but Thistle were too strong and saw the game out quite comfortably.
10. Sat-18-Nov-1905 [a] L0-4 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Final)
SR 20/11/1905. Duncan, Lyon. McKenzie, Wilson, Gray, Allan, Lawrie, McAllister, Heggie, Brown, McGregor.
Despite wasting a number of good chances Hearts won the cup with a bit to spare. Thistle had their attacking moments but the Hearts keeper was in good form. Down 1-0 at half-time, the second half was fairly routine despite Thistle never giving up.
11. Sat-25-Nov-1905 [h] W7-1 Johnstone (Friendly)
PRG 2/12/1905. Duncan, Lyon McKENZIE, Wilson, McCunn, Allan, Lawrie, Gray (A), SMITH (3), BROWN, McGREGOR (2).
The game soon opened out with chances at both ends. Johnstone went ahead but goals by McGregor and Smith made it 2-1 at half-time. One-way traffic saw McGregor, McKenzie, Brown and Smith (2) score. Johnstone had a man sent off at 5-1.
12. Sat-02-Dec-1905 [h] W4-1 St Mirren (Friendly)
PRG 9/12/1905. SMITH, BROWN (2), ALLAN. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Smith finished off a Kinloch cross for 1-0 then Brown made it 2. Smith shot a penalty against the bar but Brown scored with the rebound. St Mirren had a good spell after half-time and reduced the lead but it was all they managed. Allan made it 4-1 late on.
13. Sat-23-Dec-1905 [h] W5-0 Wishaw Amateurs (Friendly)
SR 25/12/1905. McColl, Murray, McKenzie, Wilson, Auld, Allan, Kinnon, Gray, Smith, McGregor, Brown.
Wishaw's play was tricky and neat but not productive. Thistle picked them off rather easily and scored five first-half goals. The second half was quiet in comparison although the amateurs might have scored on a couple of occasions.
14. Sat-30-Dec-1905 [a] W3-1 Berwick Rangers (Friendly)
BWN 2/1/1906. Davidson, Jones, Burgon, Wilson, Roughhead*, Allan, Gray, McEwan, McCALL (2), BROWN, McGregor. *Probably T. Roughead of Berwick Rangers.
The game was a tame affair. Thistle turned up some players short but used some local reserves. McCall scored and it was 1-1 at half-time. He scored again along with Brown for a 3-1 win.
15. Wed-03-Jan-1906 [a] W4-3 Girvan (Friendly)
SR 5/1/1906. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
16. Sat-20-Jan-1906 [h] L1-2 Kilmarnock (Friendly)
SR 22/1/1906. Tait, McMurray, McKenzie, Wilson, Auld, Cook, Robertson, Gray (A), Heggie, McAllister (A), McGregor. Scorer as yet not sourced.
Thistle made nothing of a stout Kilmarnock defence nor ferocious weather in their faces. They trailed 1-0 at half-time. Kilmarnock added a second before Thistle finally got on the scoresheet but it wasn't enough.
17. Sat-27-Jan-1906 [a] L0-7 Rangers (Glasgow 2nd XI Cup Semi Final)
SR 29/1/1906. Muncie, McMurray, McKenzie, Wilson, Auld, Allan, McKinnon (G), Allan (A), Smith (FG), Brown, McCall. Thistle joined the competition at the Semi-Final stage. Although this game is written as "Second XI Cup" in the paper, that tournament was completed in November 1905, so we've presumed this to be the "Glasgow 2nd XI Cup", especially since we know that Thistle were drawn to play Rangers in that tournament.
Rangers had a strong team out, Thistle had a number of new men. A penalty set Rangers on their way. It was 3-0 at half-time and the score tells its own story. Rangers won “rather easily”.
18. Sat-24-Mar-1906 [a] L0-2 Alloa Athletic (Friendly)
AA 31/3/1906. Muncie, Hazelton, McKenzie, Wilson (W), Hamilton, Wilson H, Naysmith, Lawrie, Smith, Gray, Wylie.
Alloa had the best of the first half and Muncie was the main reason it remained goalless. With the wind and snow in their faces Thistle were pinned back for most of the second half and a couple of quick goals settled the match.
19. Mon-14-May-1906 [a] L1-4 Blantyre Victoria (Friendly)
HH 16/5/1906. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
The locals led 2-1 at half-time, the second a 30-yarder. Thistle took the second half more seriously and had a few chances but a third goal came from a break up field. Gibson went close then another breakaway made it 4-1.
